2026-2027 MATEC Clinician Scholars Program Letter of Recommendation

Disclaimer: The Clinician Scholars Program is funded through the Midwest AIDS Training + Education Center (MATEC), which is a federally-funded grant program under the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (Part F). All MATEC programming, including the Clinician Scholars Program, is contingent on continued funding. We commit to notifying applicants at the earliest point possible of any funding changes that might impact the continuation of this program.
Your colleague is applying to be part of the Midwest AIDS Training + Education Center (MATEC) Clinician Scholars Program. The MATEC Clinician Scholars Program is a 12-month individualized course of study designed to increase the applicant’s capacity to diagnose, treat, manage, and prevent HIV infection. Scholars will be assigned a local HIV clinical expert as a Mentor to guide them through their course of study. A local MATEC staff member will act as a Monitor to assist the Scholar in coordinating their training and preceptorship opportunities.

Scholars are expected to complete certain activities during the course of the program. Applicants accepted into the Clinician Scholars Program must:
  • Be currently providing direct clinical care services in the Midwest AETC region.
  • Complete at least 52 hours of study, which includes 40 hours of training and 12 hours of clinical preceptorship between July 1st and June 30th.
  • Participate in the MATEC Clinician Scholars Program Immersion Institute and Collaborative Learning Series.
  • Present at least one patient case to their Mentor during the course of the program year.

MATEC encourages all applicants to submit a Letter(s) of Recommendation to support their application. It is not a requirement, but in the case of multiple applicants, this letter will be taken into consideration. We encourage applicants to select a reference who really knows their clinical capacity, either a current or recent supervisor, or a colleague familiar with them as a team member. It is our hope that the person selected to write the letter knows the applicant's work and is able to speak about how the Clinician Scholars Program would enhance the applicant's ability to provide HIV care.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Karen Curd Harris, Regional Coordinator for the MATEC Clinician Scholars Program, at kcurd@iu.edu.
