The West Suburban Symphony is a community orchestra, composed of volunteer players. We have membership openings in several sections, as indicated by Question 4 below. On February 25, 2023, we will hear auditions for the open chairs, in La Grange.  Here is some information about our orchestra, below.

We hope you audition! We are a welcoming group that enjoys a mix of hard work and laughter in our rehearsals and has fostered many enduring friendships (and a few marriages). Our audiences LOVE our concerts: we give exciting, passionate performances and invite our audience members to applaud whenever they feel like it, as we want everyone to feel welcome and included.

The process starts with a solo audition involving 3 to 9 minutes of music, played for our music director and 2-3 orchestra members. The audition music consists of three pieces, each of which is 1-3 minutes in length:  an orchestra excerpt that we email to auditioners in advance, a sight-reading excerpt we provide on the audition day, and an excerpt of the auditioner's choice.
 
Following a successful solo audition, players perform in 2 concerts with our orchestra, as an ensemble audition, before being offered membership. 
 
The orchestra rehearses and performs as described below. 
 
The orchestra performs primarily on Sunday afternoons in the Hinsdale or Naperville areas; on occasion it performs on Saturday evenings. It currently plays 4 public, weekend concerts each year, typically in October, December, March, and May. It also plays one weekday morning concert for school children each fall, as part of our not-for-profit charitable mission.
 
The orchestra rehearses primarily on Tuesdays, 7:30-10 pm, in the Hinsdale area. The last rehearsal before each concert is usually on a Friday, 7:30-10 pm, and on occasion on a Saturday, 9:30 am - noon, in either the Hinsdale or Naperville areas. We ask players to participate in more than half the rehearsals for each concert; typically, we have 6-7 rehearsals per concert, depending on the music.
