2 - Describes a unique experience that shows grit, adaptability, and resilience. Gives us insight into writer’s perspective.
3 - One of the best personal statements you have read. Exceptional story. Well-written. Palpable enthusiasm towards medicine.

6.Letters of Recommendation

Red Flag - Letters mention concerns or state conditions like ‘could do well’
1 - Average letter of recommendation – describes applicant in generalities without specific examples or instances in a way that would apply to most applicants.
2 - Personal letter of recommendation – describes specific circumstances or examples that show the qualities mentioned. May mention top 15-20% of medical students worked with.
3 - Clearly superior letter, examples such as:
“One of the best medical students I have ever worked with”
“Performing at the level of a resident”

7.CV: Leadership

Red Flag - Unimpressive. What is listed sounds like fluff and is common to nearly every medical school application.
1 - Shows moderate involvement and some dedication. Lacking depth. Couple of low effort modalities (i.e. day long events, or short stints).
2 - Significant longitudinal leadership work, consistent throughout medical school. May have had a moderate impact group such as recruitment, or IM club, student organization.
3 - Very impressive leadership & involvement with significant longitudinal leadership work, has made a major impact at a local or national level.
