About the ORPA Legislative Advocacy Award

ORPA’s Legislative Advocacy Award honors an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the parks and recreation field through legislative leadership and advocacy within the last five years. Individuals and organizations may be honored for legislative leadership/advocacy at the local, county, regional, state, and/or federal level. Example outcome(s) of their work may include but are not limited to: 

1) Public policy work that supports parks and recreation in general;
2) Legislative/advocacy work that creates new funding, resources, or programs for parks and recreation agencies;
3) Defeat or repeal of legislation that is harmful to parks and recreation programs or activities; and/or
4) Efforts that increase elected officials’ awareness of and/or support for parks and recreation.

Nominations are due Wednesday, September 2, 2020 by 5:00 PM.

Nominees for the Legislative Advocacy Award may be an elected public official at the federal, state, county or local level; a volunteer member of a public board or commission; a private citizen or organization; or professional staff of a parks and recreation agency. Nominees need not be ORPA members.

To make a nomination for the ORPA Legislative Advocacy Award, please answer the following questions and provide any required information as instructed. Contact the Awards Committee at director@orpa.org with any questions about the nomination process.

ORPA Awards will be presented at the 2020 ORPA Conference Awards Luncheon in Sunriver, Oregon on November 10th. Winners are strongly encouraged to be present to receive their award. If your nominee is selected to receive the award, you will be expected to provide a two- to three-minute video that highlights the winner's contributions. If production of a video is not possible, a 2-3 minute slide presentation with accompanying script may suffice. Videos are not required as part of the nomination process. The video or slide presentation for the winning recipient is due on Friday, October 30, 2020.
