Supporting our 2019 Wealth Academy

Thank you!

BWWA’s goal is to work and be impactful in helping black women build necessary knowledge, skills, networks and capacity to grow and sustain generational wealth. We developed the idea for the Wealth Academy by listening to the desires of our network – and know that in order to build sustainable wealth and wellness, the whole individual must be considered – not only the financial aspect of their lives. The Wealth Academy covers 5 pillars in order provide a holistic approach to wealth building: Wealth Education, Business Education, Housing Education, Health and Wellness Services and Personal Development Training.

In 2018 BWWA was awarded a $75,000 grant from the City of Minneapolis ReCAST Trauma Healing program and an additional $23,000 in public and private sponsorships to launch the 2018 Wealth Academy. Some of our 2018 sponsors included The McKnight Foundation, Nexus Community Partners, Thrivent Financial, Lutheran Social Services and the Phillips Family Foundation. In 2018 Wealth Academy operations totaled $110,000. In 2018, BWWA was awarded a $75,000 grant from the City of Minneapolis ReCAST Trauma Healing program and an additional $23,000 in public and $10,000 in private sponsorships to launch the 2018 Wealth Academy.

The 2018 Wealth Academy’s theme “Healing Financial Trauma” served 70 Black women, worked with 25 educators and industry experts and worked with 25 coaches to support the Wealth Academy students through the Academy. 59 Students successfully completed the Wealth Academy and are on their path to wealth building.  The Wealth Academy filled critical gaps in the areas it covered, this grant will help BWWA sustain the Wealth Academy momentum, expand relationships critical to the success of BWWA’s base and support a base of Black women educators and coaches to serve within the Wealth Academy. Most importantly, this grant will help BWWA establish the consistency of a needed resource to effectively grow the skills, knowledge and capacity of Black women to build wealth for their families and their community.

The Wealth Academy is the first of its kind in the local Minnesota Black Community and remains in high demand by Black Women across Minnesota. BWWA received local community recognition for the Wealth Academy by receiving the “Northside Paper Maker Award” supported by the North Minneapolis U.S. Bank branch, and BWWA was the 2019 February front page featured of the local North Newspaper recognizing our 2018 Wealth Academy efforts.

The 2019 Wealth Academy will serve a max of 50 women, work with multiple educators and industry experts and several Wealth Academy coaches. Serving 50 women allows for BWWA to provide stronger program oversight and coordination, deeper engagement with students and coaches, and be more efficient in program operations, coordination, communications and impact.

A major sponsorship for the 2019 Wealth Academy will allow BWWA to bolster the offerings and increase impact for our participants. More importantly, with sponsors and industry experts educating within the Wealth Academy, it will uplift the event and open the door for other sponsors to recognize the crucial work BWWA is providing in the community. Additional government, corporate and community support will ensure the future success and advancement of this program and institution
