Request for Training Proposals

Proposal Guidelines: The Planning Committee will review all proposals with the following considerations:

• Direct relevance to self-help center staff, legal services community, pro bono attorneys, interpreters, law librarians, domestic violence programs, tribal advocates, and others who provide legal and court-connected services to low-income persons
• Clear take-home value and practical how-to tactics (particularly valued are replicable toolkits)
• Attention to emerging issues
• Innovative approaches and strategies, including:
  • Expanding clients served through low-cost services
  • Serving the limited English proficiency community
  • Technology that can help increase access and effectiveness
• Ways to deliver self-help services
• Panelists are also encouraged to submit training on vicarious trauma and interacting with vulnerable communities.

Expanded topics:  In addition to courses focusing on family law and domestic violence, for expanded civil self-help education, there is a special interest in education on how to explain concepts and help self-represented litigants with a broader range of topics including:
  • How to present evidence
  • Probate matters – including simple probate, guardianships and conservatorships
  • Assistance for both landlords and tenants in eviction proceedings
  • Assisting self-represented litigants with a variety of limited and unlimited civil cases
  • Assisting with consumer law issues
  • Helping self-represented litigants with expungements
  • How to enforce court orders and judgments
  • Helping self-represented litigants propound and respond to discovery
  • Preparing self-represented litigants for settlement and mediation
  • Preparing self-represented litigants for hearings and trial
  • Trial preparation strategies
  • Innovative practices in providing services
  • Building partnerships to provide comprehensive services
Expectations: The Planning Group may modify and/or consolidate similar proposals. If your proposal is accepted, LAAC and Judicial Council staff will provide guidance and assistance to help ensure a successful training program.  Confirmed panelists will be expected to submit all materials and A/V needs in advance.  All presentations should be 1 hour or 1.5 hours.

You may submit more than one proposal.

If the proposed session qualifies for MCLE credit, written materials are mandatory. For non-MCLE trainings, materials are strongly encouraged.

Conference Registration and Travel Expenses: Panelists are expected to cover their own travel costs. Scholarships may be available. Conference registration is complimentary for panelists.

Proposals are due no later than Friday, May 11, 2018. Please submit your proposals individually and not all at once. The Planning Group will make its final selections and notify session coordinators by late May.

Please email Jasmine Schwab-Doyle at JSchwabDoyle@laaconline.org if you have any questions or trouble filling out the form.
