Conference Program

DAY 1

Opening Remarks: President Frédéric Mion, Sciences Po and Dr Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General, Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). 17:00-17:45

Keynote Speech – Is the “Europe-MENA” strategic bond a myth? Investigating the bonds of history, social science, arts and education. 17:45-19:00

Our opening Keynote Speech will bridge together history, social sciences, arts and education to begin the two-day dialogue on the MENA and Europe. This session aims to debate the implicit pre-notions and themes of our 2-day conference: Is there a truly and intrinsically specific “Europe-Arab” bond that transcends geopolitical contingencies? Or is this simply a myth? Is the relationship between Europe and the MENA dependent on the fluctuations of the overall global system?

Keynote Speaker: Dr Ghassan Salamé, Emeritus Professor of International Relations at Sciences Po, Special Representative and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya

Opening dinner 20:00

Day 2

Panel 2. Analyzing the relationship between Europe and the MENA from a comparative perspective. 10:00-12:00

During the morning sessions, social scientists (including cultural anthropologists, speech and political analysts) and experts on public opinion trends and dynamics in Europe and the MENA will engage in vivid comparative debates over the movements of mutual opposition: are we seeing major trends? If so, are they comparable? This discussion is a truly unique opportunity to test a comparative analysis between these two critically important regions of the world.

Speakers to include: Lindsay Benstead, Portland State University Professor and former Kuwait Program Visiting Professor, Robert Springborg, Visiting Professor, Department of War Studies, King’s College London, Enrico Letta, Dean of PSIA and former Prime Minister of Italy. Lunch Break. 12:00-14:00

Panel 3. Exploring commonalities of interests between the MENA and Europe. 14:00-16:00

Bonding in politics means finding common grounds and common interests: commonalities that actually count. The last panel of Day 1 will present the following truth: European countries and Arab countries do not have common interests in all matters. That being stated, it is important to express and discuss divergences in an academic environment such as this one so that a solid relationship based on truth may be built on common and shared interests.

Speakers to include: Ambassador Lakhdar Brahimi, previous UN and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria, Elders Member, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Algeria and Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish diplomat and politician, former European Union Special Representative for the Middle East (1996-2003).
Panel 4. De-briefing our commonalities, differences and comparisons: assessing conference findings from an academic perspective  16:15 -18:00
