This SANS survey will examine the current state, security risks and how cybersecurity practitioners are meeting contemporary threats relating to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

For the purpose of this survey, IIOT is defined as “a collection and combination of networked devices and automation technologies employed in applications that comprise embedded systems (such as Process Automation [PA], Manufacturing Automation [MA] and other cyber-physical automated systems) that perform mission-critical operations and incorporate machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, prognostics, diagnostics, machine-learning, and big-data analytics capabilities to control, monitor and optimize processes in operational technology (OT) systems.

The survey will look closely at the emergence and rapid growth of IIoT systems, including its broad-scale connectivity across industry and how well automation, critical control systems, digital and physical infrastructure and accompanying operations are protected against cybersecurity threats that security practitioners must combat to help safeguard systems, assure greater reliability, operational integrity, efficiency and productivity in these complex systems.
