The Judge David S. Nelson Fellowship is a 6-week summer educational program offered by the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The Fellowship is based in the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in Boston. Students are paid a weekly stipend and the hours are usually between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. The program will run from early July until mid-August. The precise schedule will be set at a later date.

Every year, the court selects approximately ten to twelve Nelson Fellows, ten of whom usually come from the public schools in the City of Boston. Each Fellow is assigned to a judge and works in that judge's chambers. The Nelson Fellows attend trials and other court proceedings with their assigned judge and assist in general office operations.

The Fellows also take part in structured classes, in subject areas such as civil rights and public speaking. During this intensive summer program, students meet community leaders, visit local colleges, and are introduced to organizations that facilitate the college application process. The final and most exciting event is the mock trial before a federal judge. Throughout the summer, the Fellows prepare for the mock trial under the guidance of legal professionals.
