Do you have tips on how to write a strong application?

Health Bucks should be distributed as part of your organization’s nutrition and health programming as part of an activity that is likely to lead to coupon redemption. People are more likely to spend their Health Bucks when they get more than one coupon at a time and when they are distributed at a farmers market. A strong application includes plans to:
  • Distribute 2-3 Health Bucks per person or family member. Remind your clients to spend their Health Bucks before the December 31, 2018 expiration date.
  • Lead your clients on a farmers market walking tour or participate in a farmers market-based nutrition workshop and cooking demonstration. Organizations are strongly encouraged to incorporate a market tour into their program plan.
  • Follow up with recipients to see whether they’ve used their Health Bucks and if not, encourage them to use the coupons.
How can my organization get more Health Bucks?
  • Purchase Health Bucks: If your organization requires more Health Bucks than the Health Department allotment or is for-profit, you can purchase them. Please email farmersmarkets@health.nyc.gov for more information.
How else can New Yorkers get Health Bucks?
  • Shop at NYC farmers markets using SNAP benefits: For every $5 spent at farmers markets using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on an EBT card, shoppers receive $2 in Health Bucks. Health Bucks are available year-round at NYC farmers markets that accept EBT.
  • Participate in nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations: At some farmers markets, the NYC Health Department provides free nutrition workshops for adults and children. Each workshop includes nutrition information, cooking demonstrations, and recipe tastings. Participants receive $2 in Health Bucks.
