1. Techie Camp Student Application

With support from the AEP Foundation Credits Count SM program and Columbus State Community College, TECH CORPS will implement its signature Techie Camp® program with 40 Columbus City middle school students during the summer of 2017.

This Techie Camp will be a full-day, two week summer experience designed specifically for middle school students. The goal of Techie Camp is to engage students in activities that can stimulate a deeper interest in technology as well as  as well as provide opportunities for them to express their imaginations. Students can take a "deep dive" into Programming, as well as Robotics or App Development.
 
Each camp is comprised of 20 students and led by two TECH CORPS Instructors. This will be a two week experience for students with the following tracks:
  • Week 1: Programming (all students)
  • Week 2: App Development or Robotics
This opportunity will be limited to 40 students. Families will be responsible for transportation each day. The camp will be held at Columbus State Community College. Below are details specific details:

Grade Band: Rising 6th-8th grades

Below are descriptions of the camp topics:

Middle School Programming
Using Unity, an industry-standard 3D programming environment, students will learn the concepts of programming through the creation of video games and interactive stories.  

Middle School Robotics
Students explore intermediate engineering and programming. They expand their logical and mechanical thinking skills as they work in teams to mastermind the ultimate robot. Students will discover their inner creativity all while developing their ability to troubleshoot dilemmas as they interact with the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots.

Middle School App Development
Students will allow students to explore the world of mobile app development and develop a real world app that tackles a real world need or problem. Students will learn the buildings blocks, UI, graphics, media and sensors to develop a cell phone app. Students will end the week with the actual application that they can use on their Android smart phones and share it with their family and friends.
 
THIS OPPORTUNITY IS ONLY OPEN TO STUDENTS WHO MEET BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

-Currently enrolled in a Columbus City middle school building
-Will be enrolled in the 6th-8th grade in the Fall of 2017.
 
Student Selection Process:

Students interested in being selected to participate will need to complete the full application before the Friday, March 31, 2017 deadline. Up to 20 students will be selected for each camp based on their application (20 points) and short answer questions (80 points). Students will be notified of selection by Friday, April 7th.
