RSVP for February 14 OR May 23 (8:30 -10:00 am)
Louise Slaughter Conference Room (1-9555)

DESCRIPTION:
Mentoring Workshop goal: The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss effective methods for writing strong recommendation letters for mentees and colleagues, and to prepare compelling award nominations. Specific letters to be considered: academic and non-academic jobs, fellowship applications, promotions, and convocation awards.

Workshop leaders: This workshop will be conducted by Edith Lord (SeAD, Grad Ed) and Rob Quivey (COB, MBI). A panel of active nomination letter writers includes Drs. Eddie Schwarz (2/14 and 5/23), Jeff Lyness (5/23), Kate Cerulli (2/14), Linda Chaudron (2/14), Lynne Maquat (5/23) and Vivian Lewis (2/14 and 5/23).

Group activities: Small groups will work to identify key requirements for letters of support and discuss mentee opportunities for professional growth. Workshop leaders will provide letter drafts, but you may also bring your own in-progress letters to the session.

Target Audience: Faculty at all levels – novice to experienced, tenure track and non-tenure track – are invited to fine tune their mentoring skills in a supportive environment with their colleagues. If you are an individual who has been asked to write reference letters for PhD graduate students, postdocs, or colleagues, but would like to build your confidence and to strengthen your letters of support, we cordially invite you to participate in the URBEST mentoring session. If you are an individual who had not been asked to write many reference letters, consider that you are often asked to write a first draft of your own letters of support. This workshop will build your confidence in describing your own successes through stories.
