2017 Bond Award: For the love of science

The purpose of the annual Bond Creative Elementary Science Awards is to encourage an understanding and appreciation of science and how it works.

The Second Annual Award partners a pair of secondary science Teacher Candidates (TCs) with a seasoned team of K-6th grade teachers to develop and deliver two hands-on, minds-on science lessons to these teachers’ classrooms.  This partnership involves three populations of active learners: elementary teachers, their students and UNC secondary science teacher candidates. Elementary teachers will lead the design of the lessons but TCs can do much of the time-consuming detail work, assemble materials and help deliver the lesson.

The Bond Awards this year will go to two Teams of elementary teachers at various grade levels within District 6 (e.g., a team of fifth grade teachers at, say, Monfort Elementary School or Union Colony Elementary).  Awards will be determined based on responses to questions about the intent of the team, its interest in and commitment to a three-way participation of learners (teachers, UNC TCs, students), specific expectations regarding final results from the partnership, and support from the school administrator. Each award may vary with up to a total of $7,500 between both awards. The award can be used as follows: Up to $500 for personal use of each teacher on your Team, support for the lesson supplies and $250 will go to your school.

To extend the reach of this partnership, the work and instructional planning of these teachers and TCs will be captured via a kit that includes the lesson as well as enough materials to teach a class of 30 students.  These kits will be shared with the same grade level teachers within the district.

Instructions:
To apply, the Team is asked to complete 11 short questions about their team and specific expectations for the partnership with UNC science teacher candidates. Each Team must also have their administrator complete three questions about the Team's plans.
