Lynton Colloquium Survey 2014: Establishing a Research Agenda for the Field

This year, NERCHE is partnering with the Center for Engaged Democracy (CED) at Merrimack College to use the Colloquium on September 15 to help articulate and advance a research agenda for the field. Please complete the short survey below (and share with colleagues) by September 5, 2014. Your individual contributions will be aggregated and used to frame the content of the Colloquium by helping to identify 5 (or more) research priorities for the coming academic year. The five areas identified below are compiled from a survey of recent Lynton Award recipients – these are their responses. We want to hear from you. Your responses will kept anonymous.

At the Colloquium, we will present the results of our survey by highlighting the top reoccurring research priority areas. Participants will further prioritize these research areas and form research working groups to carry out the research in 2014-2015, the results of which will be presented at the 2015 Lynton Colloquium.

These are the five priority areas identified through a survey of past early career Lynton Award recipients and finalists. They appear in no particular order of ranking by the respondents. We have an ‘open’ sixth area to allow identification of areas not captured in the first round of data collection.

Faculty Rewards/Recognition: Includes policies and processes around promotion (and tenure at tenure granting institutions), as well as awards, resources (funding) and reporting (annual faculty reports), and preparation for faculty careers through graduate education.

Leadership: Includes ways in which academic administrators (Provosts, Deans, Chairs) create supportive institutional cultures for community-engaged scholars, as well as professional development for administrators to be effective and supportive (of community engaged faculty) community-engaged campus leaders.

Metrics:Includes measures and benchmarks around community impacts, as well as institutional measures (rankings, classifications, honors, funding) related to campus status and recognition.

Student Outcomes: Includes civic learning outcomes as well as outcomes around persistence, retention, and success.

Structures of Inclusion:This is an emerging issue that includes questions of student diversity, faculty diversity, research methodologies, scholar identities, inequality regimes and structures of exclusion. Respondents identified an interest in reframing these regimes and structures toward equality and inclusion. (We recognize that there is not yet a clear language to talk about this issue and we want to begin to explore and more clearly articulate this area together.

Other/Gaps: The limitation of the data so far is that it comes primarily from research universities and tenure track faculty. What is a key priority that may not have been captured in the above five areas? Please add additional priorities below and your rationale for choosing them.
