Parent Permission Form for GS Service Learning Trips 2018 for 10th graders with China Added

I understand that my child will have an opportunity to enter into a random selection process in order to participate in a service learning trip, and that I must approve by October 12, 2017 any service learning trip for which my child would like to be considered. I also understand that while service learning trip grants are offered to those students who receive financial aid for their tuition, most grants may only cover five to fifty percent of the cost of a service learning trip, although a few may cover more. In addition, I am aware that by October 12, 2017, my child must also submit a separate personal statement/application for each project in which s/he is interested.
The service learning trips that we are planning to offer in spring and summer of 2018 are listed below. Please indicate any and all service learning trips in which you would allow your child to participate, should s/he be selected. Space is limited; students will participate in a random drawing for a spot on a service learning trip. Note: all costs are approximate at this time and subject to change. Specific dates are not yet available. As a general rule, summer service learning trips start within a few days after the last day of exams and run two to three weeks. Finally, a $500 deposit is required for your child to sign up. This deposit will be charged to your George School account through the Business Office once the family provides consent. Alternatively, you may send a check. This deposit will be applied to the cost of your child's trip.

Arizona – $3,295 (SUMMER 2018) - Students work as teachers’ aides in the Kayenta Elementary School located in the Navajo Nation of Arizona. Homestays with local families provide the opportunity to experience the daily life and culture in the Navajo Nation. After-school activities for George School students might include horseback riding through Monument Valley, camping out on the Black Mesa, or rafting down the Colorado River.

Cuba - $3,595 - (SUMMER 2018) - George School students will help in the major reconstruction of a church in Holguin. Plans also include working in an urban hydroponic garden and visiting a community orphanage and a school for the blind and deaf. We also expect to visit the city of Santiago, the Quaker community in Gibara, the historic town of Bayamo, and the beach at Guardalavaca.

China – $4,295 - (SUMMER 2018) - Students will spend about three weeks in China, primarily doing service, but also experiencing Chinese life and culture near and in Beijing. The group will perform service with various groups, which may include working with populations that have a range of physical and mental abilities. During the service experience, students will stay with Chinese families. The group will have a wide variety of experiences and be exposed to many aspects of China. Note that the trip is open to all students, but preference will be given to students who are studying or have studied Chinese.

Rwanda - $4095 – (Summer 2018) - This service project will have students complete light construction and landscape a Quaker primary school, high school, and other non-profit organizations in the area. Participants will also experience workshop training by members of the Alternatives to Violence Project and the Help Increase the Peace Project. Additionally, Rwandese leaders working in conjunction with the Africa Great Lakes Initiative, which is a part of Friends Peace Teams, and, the Transformational Leadership Center, a Rwanda-based non-profit, will also work with our group. Visits to a women’s art cooperative, ethnographic museums, a Friends meeting and other activities combined with discussions regarding Rwanda’s history are woven into this service learning trip.
