The Role

Our team leverages SurveyMonkey’s core survey platform to power SurveyMonkey Audience. SurveyMonkey Audience is a unique self-serve product, disrupting the market research space.  It allows small businesses and Fortune 500 companies to quickly and affordably get feedback from real customers around the world. Our platform finds and matches survey takers to potential surveys based on demographic search criteria in real time. Anyone can sign up to take surveys and we donate money to charity for each survey completed. Since launching, we’ve donated over $12 million dollars to charity.

We’re looking for a Lead Software Engineer to lead one of our Audience engineering teams in downtown Portland.  Our team is responsible for everything related to the buyer experience for SurveyMonkey Audience, working on both frontend and backend projects.  They will partner closely with our other Audience teams in Portland and Seattle.



  • Growing and leading a small team of engineers while contributing to the codebase
  • Build and maintain a high-traffic website, built primarily in Python and JavaScript (using React as a framework)
  • Top-to-bottom ownership of new features, including crafting technical specs, writing readable and extensible code, and keeping tabs on post-release metrics
  • Collaboration with other engineering leads and cross-functional teams in Product, Marketing and Design
  • Help grow SurveyMonkey Audience in new markets (international) and devices (mobile)



  • 1-3 years experience leading an engineering team
  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • Hands-on knowledge of Python and experience working with the relevant tools
  • Experience with web frameworks and libraries in Python (Pyramid, Django), JavaScript (React) or other language (Ruby on Rails)
  • Culture of code reviews, writing tech specs, and collaborating closely with other people
  • Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent
