Touchdowns, Tackles and Tailgates: College Football Predictions with SurveyMonkey Audience

Where can you find a gathering of Wolverines, Ducks, Tigers, Badgers, and Bears? Well, certainly at your local zoo, but we were thinking more about finding these critters on football fields across the country. That’s right, these are some of our favorite mascots from college football teams across the country. And now that the 2012 season is in full swing, we decided to use SurveyMonkey Audience to see which teams most of you are following and make some early predictions about who might be taking home the Heisman.

We surveyed just over 250 men and women, ages 18 to 44. Then, in an effort to get closer to NCAA college football fans, we targeted members who had at least some college experience, and who used the Internet to obtain news or information about sports.

So let’s start with the members who say they wouldn’t consider themselves college football fans… Turns out almost 40% of them are watching NFL football instead of college, followed by Major League Baseball and NHL Hockey in popularity.

But now back to college football! Of the respondents who consider themselves NCAA college football fans, an impressive 67.8% said they watched at least one college football game in Week 1, which is typically non-conference match-ups and happened to be Labor Day weekend. Not surprisingly, even more respondents (76.5% of them) were planning to watch a game this last weekend. If it’s a Saturday in fall, what else are you going to do?

In terms of where games are being watched, 76% said they most frequently watch college football games from the comforts of home, with the next highest choice being watching at a sports bar (10%). Over 76% of our respondents said they watch the game live, and don’t record it, even to be able to skip commercials or watch it again later. Making the fans even more dedicated, over 72% said they would watch an entire football game and not stop watching, even if either team was hopelessly losing. Now, those are true fans!

Where friends and family are concerned, about 67% of those surveyed said that watching a college football game with friends or family is just as important as watching the game itself. In terms of how respondents watch, there’s an even split between respondents who carry on a conversation or joke around throughout the game, but more than 17% only allow chatting during commercials or big plays.

Next, we decided to play favorites. We asked respondents which college football team was their favorite and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came out on top! Close behind in votes were the Ohio State Buckeyes,  the USC Trojans, the LSU Tigers, and the Michigan State Spartans. Pretty impressive to have four Midwest and East Coast schools at the top, considering we polled people from across the country (you can see in the map below exactly where this survey’s respondents are from).

When we asked for predictions about who will win the BCS Championship game, almost 40% of the respondents said it was too early to guess, but the next most popular choice was the Alabama Crimson Tide, with over 26% of the votes. And perhaps they’ll be going head to head against USC, which 14% of respondents thought would be the winning team.

Speaking of USC, while over 40% of respondents again thought it was too early to tell who would win the Heisman Trophy, 25% of respondents think that USC senior Quarterback Matt Barkley is headed for the Heisman. Other front-runners, according to our members, include University of Oregon sophomore Running Back De’Anthony Thomas, Wisconsin senior Running Back Montee Ball, and University of Michigan senior Quarterback Denard Robinson.

Regardless of who wins the BCS Championship or the Heisman, we’re looking forward to a fun-filled and suspenseful NCAA college football season.
