It’s that time of year again—top tips straight from our Customer Engagement monkeys based in beautiful Portland, Oregon and lovely Dublin, Ireland. These are some of their favorite answers and tips ‘n tricks from questions heard straight from you, dear customers, and searched about in our newly revamped Help Center.

Enough intro. Let’s get to the top 4 of 2015, shall we?

Hannah: How to use page breaks to your survey’s advantage

Hannah HeadshotWe’ve all been there. You design an amazing survey and when it comes time to analyze your data, you are disappointed that long pages of questions went unanswered. You rack your brain and wonder what you did wrong.

I’m here to tell you a couple of well-placed page breaks can be the difference between many skipped questions and valuable data! By simply adding additional page breaks to your survey, you not only create an easier respondent experience, but you’re also helping yourself at the same time. Now what could be better?

By adding additional page breaks to your survey, you provide more chances for the survey to save a user’s response, as each page’s worth of responses is saved once the respondent navigates to the next page.

When creating your survey, if you create more pages with fewer questions, there’s a higher chance you’ll capture more data, as there are more opportunities for the survey to save each page’s responses.

Additionally, taking a survey broken into multiple pages helps a respondent stay engaged, as they need to navigate each page to answer additional questions. Nothing’s worse on the respondent’s end than opening a survey that is just one long, endless page they need to scroll and scroll through. By allowing Editing, you can ensure respondents are able to return to your survey to pick up where they left off. This ensures that respondents don’t get too fatigued as well as ensuring you capture the most data possible.

To allow respondents to edit their own survey responses:

  1. Go to the Collect Responses section of your survey.
  2. Click the name of your collector.
  3. From the collector options, click Response Editing (or Edit Responses).
  4. Choose one of the available editing options for your collector type.

Who knew that page breaks would become your new best friend? High-five.

Melissa: How to restrict access to your survey

Melissa_CS-blogEmployee satisfaction, event attendants, or VIP clients…we know this for a fact: Insightful data is the key to make better decisions. But for data to be insightful, it absolutely needs to be relevant. To make sure the right people answer your questions, you will want to restrict the access to your survey only to them.

How can you ensure that your survey will be completed by your very restrictive audience you say? Well, to celebrate 2016 the right way, we don’t just have one way to do this. We have three!

Like for many of our settings, your access restriction options will depend on the type of collector you choose.

Reach out to each respondent individually using an Email Invitation Collector

If our Email Invitation Collector rhymes with personalized message, it also includes a very unique link that is directly attached to the email address. If you already know the email addresses of your participants, then use this distribution method to track their response as well as tie the response to their email address.

The fun part is also that once this link will be used, no one else can complete the survey with it. So if your respondents accidentally forward your great survey to their email list, you won’t be flooded with irrelevant responses.

Restrict the access to your Web Link collector

Ah, we love singing the praises of our Web Link collector and how quick and simple it is to send a Web Link around. Just because it’s easy to use doesn’t mean that the quality of your data should be altered however. This is why we give you the option to add a password to your survey link.

When you set up your Web Link to be sent out, just make sure that you add a password in the Advanced Settings options, then share it only with the people that need to access your survey. This is also a good way to prevent those evil ‘bots from entering your survey.

This option is also available on the good old Email invitation collector if you want to add a double security.

Block or allow certain IP addresses

Another option that you can enable on both your Email invitation collector and your Web Link is allowing or blocking certain IP addresses. You wouldn’t be able to use IP ranges here but it can still help you restrict access to only your company network for example. Once again, you will need to implement it from your Collector Settings.

Now that you made sure that your survey is only accessible to right people, the next thing there is to do is to spread the word and get this great data back to you.

Manuel: How to (properly) end a survey

ManuelWhen your respondents have finished your survey, the last impression you give is as important as that last bite of holiday pie you’re (hopefully) eating right now. So take this opportunity to engage them!

SurveyMonkey gives you several options. By default, respondents go to our Thank You page, to say thank you for taking the survey and providing information about SurveyMonkey.

Depending on your professional plan and the collector you’re using you’ll see options to customize the Survey End Page, add a Custom Thank You page and show them a custom disqualification message or Instant Results of the survey.

Custom Thank You Page: This is the opportunity to thank respondents for their time. This will help you create rapport among your respondents, increasing likelihood they will take another of your surveys in the future. This option is located under the Collector Settings and you can include links to your own website using HTML with the <a> tag.

Custom Disqualification: When using qualifying question respondents who don’t meet your targeting criteria will exit from the survey. Here you have a couple of options: you can simply thank them for their time or guide respondents to a relevant website and, at the very least, increase traffic to that site.

Survey End Page: You can choose to show the standard end page, show a custom end page, allow another response or close the survey window. Redirection is an extremely useful tool to guide your respondents to where you want them to be, you can return respondents to your homepage, an informational webpage or a registration form after they have completed the survey. This feature is not available for embedded surveys in a Website Collector.

Instant Results: Finally, you reward your respondents with real-time summary of your survey results. This is a great option to motivate your survey-takers to complete the survey in exchange of the insights you are trying to get.

Take into account that all end page options are saved for the collector you are using. If you have many collectors, you need to choose these options for each of the survey’s collectors separately.

ChristopherChristopher: How to determine the best of the best using Forced Ranking

Have you ever asked your respondents to rank their top 3 choices out of list of 10? This is definitely possible when designing surveys. While you can’t do this with a Ranking question, you can do this with a Matrix question with Forced Ranking applied.

Forced Ranking allows only one choice per column, and in a sense forces your respondents to assign a column answer to a row option. This requires your respondents to compare row choices against one another, and helps you narrow down the top possible choices to a limited few.

This is a really great option if you’re looking to ask your audience to choose their top choices from a larger pool of possible answer options. With Forced Ranking, you can list out all of your potential answer choices as row options. You can then use your Column options as display ranking options (for example, First Choice, Second Choice, etc).

For example, let’s say you’re a successful ice cream store, debating whether or not to start selling gallons for purchase. You don’t want to yet do this for all of your ice cream flavors, but just your top 3, so you want your customers to rank the best of the best.

You’ll want to check the Forced Ranking option underneath your Column options. Now when your respondents take your survey, they’ll only be able to choose the three answer options.

This is really helpful to declutter your results, especially when you don’t need all possible options ranked. Also, don’t forget to also adjust your weights. By default the weights start with the lowest for the first column choice—you can reverse them so that the top answer choice (Choice 1) has the highest weight.
