Presidential Outcomes: SurveyMonkey and Voto Latino Gauge Voter Opinion in the Election’s Last Week

In the week left before the election, analysts around the country are working overtime to predict who will win this year’s presidential race. SurveyMonkey and Voto Latino joined forces to survey voters and get their opinions about this long election season and what’s on their minds as they prepare for November 6th.

Of the over 500 Americans surveyed using SurveyMonkey Audience, the data showed that more people watched the second presidential debate than any other (58%), and the vice presidential debate ranked lowest in terms of viewers (47%). And while more than 55% of respondents believe that the debates play a role in deciding whom will be elected president (either because consumers need to understand their policy views, or because the candidates should be compared side-by-side), 82% responded that the debates had no impact on who they were going to vote for – seems like most people have already made up their minds! This indicates that many consumers see the debates as a way to get information about the candidates’ views, not as a determining factor for their vote.

The economy continues to dominate the conversation for most voters, with 60% responding that it was the most important issue for them this election, while healthcare and/or women’s issues were the second most important issue with the respondents (20%). While job growth and other economic indicators have been slowly improving, this broader nationwide consensus shows that consumers are still worried about how the slowed economy will impact their lives.

And while a large number of consumers are dedicated to watching the debates and understanding the proposed policies of the candidates, the below chart shows nearly a third of the respondents would prefer to get their debate news via SNL spoofs or political satire shows such as Jon Stewart (32%). And almost a quarter would prefer to watch the World Series (24%). Consumers are looking for information about the debates, but many are just looking for entertaining highlights, rather than immersing themselves into the actual discussion.
