Outside Lands Draws Music Fans (and Monkeys)

Outside Lands Draws Music Fans (and Monkeys)

We monkeys love to dance and will take any excuse to play around outside, so when we heard about this year’s Outside Lands Music Festival, we stopped monkeying around and started making plans!

Outside Lands is an annual three-day music festival held in early August smack in the middle of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California.  The Outside Lands music festival is only its fourth year, but has yet again amassed an impressive lineup of artists, bands, comedians, and performers. Stevie Wonder is going to be there, need we say more?

Fun fact: The Outside Lands name goes all the way back to the Gold Rush days, when the area now known as Golden Gate Park was uninhabited, undeveloped land at the far end of the city, far away from the majority of the city’s residents. Can you imagine?

Anyway, back to modern times and this year’s festival. We were curious to see who we’d find attending Outside Lands 2012 and which artists they were most excited about seeing perform, so using SurveyMonkey Audience, we surveyed 250 respondents, ages 18 to 40, living in California, Oregon, or Nevada, who use the internet to download or listen to music.

We started the survey with a question asking if respondents had heard of Outside Lands and if they were planning to attend this year’s event, then we used our skip logic feature to route respondents only to related survey questions.

We were really surprised to find that almost 19% of the respondents who answered that they were not planning on attending the event had never even heard of Outside Lands. However, we’re happy to report that many of those who were unfamiliar, commented that they planned on looking up more information about the festival!

About 29% of the respondents who might be attending said that the location was keeping them from making solid plans, 28% said they were waiting for friend to commit to going, and predictably, almost half of the respondents said that ticket cost was a deciding factor.

Of the respondents who said they were going, 60% said that they thought the ticket prices were somewhat too expensive (but were still willing to buy them), and in a separate question, 60% said they hadn’t even bought their tickets yet!

Overwhelmingly, the majority of these respondents said they are currently living in San Francisco and in terms of travel, about 75% of combined responses indicated these attendees are planning to get to the festival by car, bus, or on foot. Most were also planning to get food and drinks from the festival vendors, but about 25% of respondents said they were going to bring their own food.

Now to the really fun part – the music! We found a wide variety of music preferences from the survey participants who said they are going to the festival with the most popular favorite music types are Rock or Electronic, with Pop, Blues, Rap, or Indie coming in close behind.

All makes good sense for Outside Lands, since the band or act attendees are most excited to see is the Foo Fighters, followed by Metallica, Skrillex, The Kills, and Passion Pit. Other honorable mentions include Bloc Party and Santigold, but not to be forgotten: Stevie Wonder, Jack White, Beck, Sigur Rios, Justice, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Andrew Bird, and Franz Ferdinand who all  garnered votes from attendees. We’re going to be dancing for three days straight, and we can’t wait!

Are you planning to attend Outside Lands or another summer music festival this year? Who are you most excited to see perform? Leave us your thoughts in the Comments section below, or if you’re interested in running a data-gathering project of your own, SurveyMonkey Audience can help you reach the right respondents!
