Internships at SurveyMonkey

Internships at SurveyMonkey

Before we say goodbye to 2011, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate our summer interns.  They were an amazing bunch!  And, before they went back to school, they wrote this post that we wanted to share with you.  Sit back and reminisce about those warm summer days as you read on!

Being an Intern at the Monkey

Summer activities:  Going to the beach?  Check.  Enjoying the sunshine?  Check.  Helping millions of people make better decisions?  Check.

For each us on the SurveyMonkey intern team this summer, working here has been nothing short of amazing.  Unfortunately, it’s time for us to return to school; but before we do, we want to share with you some of our experiences from the summer.

Ben Rudolph – Software Engineering

I have had an amazing experience at the Monkey. First off, the projects I got to work on were truly interesting and impactful. I developed a new collector type that allows users to embed their surveys onto a Facebook page. I was able to see this project from its birth to the final push to production. I was also able to enhance the text analysis feature by writing my own search function for it. Even though I learned a tremendous amount of programming doing these projects, I would still say the best part was working with SurveyMonkey team. Everyone there was extremely helpful and was happy to take time out of their day to help me out. This was a nice change from the cold dark cubicles that so often infect large corporations. Here there were no walls making collaboration second nature.

Robert Hintz – Product Management

My largest project this summer has been working with our team to see what is necessary in adding eChecks as a payment option for US customers. They made me the leader of this project, giving me the opportunity to research on my own how to allow customers to pay through this service.

A great part about working for SurveyMonkey is that every project I work on creates a noticeable change to the website and reaches millions of users. Once each project finishes, it’s up on the website for everyone to see.

But the best part about working at SurveyMonkey is that everyone here is extremely nice; it’s like a family.  And everyone here sure knows how to have a good time. Here is a short list of things I have done for the first time this summer with the help of SurveyMonkey: ride a mechanical bull, drive a convertible, create a music video, go to a Giants game, watch “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and give a presentation for a hack-a-thon.

Phillip Semenenko – Information Technology

Working for SurveyMonkey as an intern is quite a treat and nothing like the other places I have worked at in years. They have some of the nicest and funniest people I have ever met. My internship was in the IT department, and it required a lot of responsibility and attention to detail. However, in the end, I received respect and acknowledgement from colleagues for the work I have done. In other companies IT people are just called upon from the depth of the basements to repair computers and are sent back down when the job as done. Not at this company. It is surely one of the best work experiences I ever had.

Alex Topacio – Recruiting, Survey Methodology, Marketing

One of the most significant projects I’ve worked on this summer is Question Bank, the newly released database of methodologically sound survey questions and templates.  It was an extraordinary opportunity to work one-on-one with a leading survey methodologist and make a direct impact on one of our product features.

The other major project I’ve taken on this summer is setting up our campus recruiting program for the upcoming academic year.  We’re really excited about expanding our presence on college and university campuses, and I’ve had a lot of fun taking the lead on this project.

UPDATE:  We were so lucky to have Philip join the team as a full-time employee this Fall!  Some of our other amazing interns are graduating and moving on (SOB!) and we wish ALL of them the very best. You’ll always have a home here at the Monkey.

Having trouble reaching the site and have just sent out a substantial email campaign to key customers.

Can we have an update when the site will be available again? This is very bad for our brand.

Nick – you should have no issues now.
