The season of runny noses and watery eyes is upon us once more–allergy season! Every year, millions of people suffer from seasonal allergies and every year there’s a rush for over-the-counter and prescription remedies. But those aren’t the only ways to treat that sneeze or sniffle of yours. Many opt for all natural treatments such as herbal supplements and neti pots.
The debate over whether people rely too heavily on antibiotics and prescription treatments continues as does the debate over the use of natural remedies vs. conventional medicine. We were curious to see how these issues affect current trends in allergy treatments. How many people prefer to go the natural route instead of over-the-counter and which do they believe is more effective?
Thanks to SurveyMonkey Audience, we collected the opinions of nearly 300 people in order to gain insights into how allergy sufferers choose to get relief and more.
Take a look at what we learned.
Although conventional medication can sometimes have faster results, we learned that preference between the two options runs pretty close. 33% for conventional meds vs. 25% for those wanting to go all natural. Next question that comes to mind–how effective are allergy treatments in both areas?
Choosing Claritin over that bunch of herbs definitely seems to be the preferred method of choice with nearly half (43%) saying it’s “quite effective”.
And for those who’ve reported using natural treatments? The results came back within close range of one another but at opposite extremes. 16% say these types of treatments are only “slightly effective”, and 15% believe they’re “quite effective”–interesting, eh?
From the data we collected, people seem prefer to go with conventional remedies over traditional, natural ones–but not by an overwhelming majority. As the debate goes on over natural and conventional treatments, it’ll be interesting to see how, and if, usage trends will have shifted the next time allergy season rolls around.
