What Is the Fate of Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Where to find holiday shopping dealsAmericans are getting ready. Not just for long lines at the grocery store but for lines at retailers from local mom-and-pop shops to Walmart, and for what? Black Friday of course. And for those averse to real life lines outdoors—Cyber Monday. Consumers’ clicking fingers are poised for one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. But just how big of a day in sales can retailers expect?

Our main monkey, Dave Goldberg, stopped by to sit down with Emily Chang of Bloomberg West to talk about the latest data we collected using SurveyMonkey Audience on all things holiday shopping. Some of the results may surprise you.

Shoppers may be over Black Friday and Cyber Monday

  • Surprisingly, 44% of respondents say they plan to avoid both of these big purchasing days.
  • Most people’s ears start to perk up about both of these holiday retail days thanks to their email (36%), company websites (29%) and word of mouth (21%).
  • Results are evenly split when it comes to whether or not respondents believe the deals are going to be better on Friday (25%) vs. Monday (25%).

Which brands will come out on top?

  • Congrats, Amazon. Get ready for a big year. The online platform is by far the preferred shopping choice of more than half of respondents (52%).
  • Target and Walmart will go head to head, according to our survey results. Out of 14 large retailers to choose from, people say they’re going to Target (17%) and Walmart (18%) over any other retailer.
  • Interestingly, one in five surveyed say they don’t plan to shop online at all this holiday season.

Consumers’ customer service preferences?

  • Nearly half (40%) want to talk to an in-store customer service desk rather than opt for virtual options.
  • 24% prefer the good old-fashioned telephone.
  • A quarter of shoppers will visit the company website to give their feedback and only 15% want to send an email.
