Finding Full-time Work Is Hard Work for Millennials

Summer can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. But if you’re a young person fresh out of college, it usually means only one thing: Time to find a job. Business Insider and News to Live By teamed up with SurveyMonkey Audience to learn about the challenges millennials face in finding their first full-time jobs. And we’ll be honest with you: It’s tough out there, especially as a millennial. While the national unemployment rate is currently 6.3%, 16% of millennials remain unemployed after six months in the job market. We say, chin up, enjoy your summer, and keep up the hard work—you’ll be working 9 to 5 in no time.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • 72% of millennials have a degree but 44% say their first full-time job does not require one.
  • 16% of millennials are not able to find work after six months in the job market.
  • 24% of millennials apply to 11 or more full-time jobs before landing a position.
  • 82% of millennials do not negotiate salary because they don’t feel comfortable or aren’t aware they can.
  • Of millennials who leave their first position, 26% say a higher salary would have kept them at the job.
