Bringing Your Own Device to Work? iPhone is Still Employees’ Favorite in 2014

AppleIt’s only February, but we’ve already got a lot of exciting mobile events on the SurveyMonkey calendar. Our CEO Dave Goldberg will soon be in Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress, where we’re unveiling the SurveyMonkey App for iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod touch®, along with our SDK for any mobile device.

We heard the call. Long gone are the days when people only correspond (or survey!) from a desk. And we also know many partake in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to work phenomenon. So we decided to follow-up on last year’s mobile trends survey, which examined mobile phone use and preferences in (and out) of the workplace.

Using SurveyMonkey Audience, we surveyed more than 600 smartphone users to get the inside scoop on mobile trends one year later–and to learn if the BYOD movement now extends to tablet computers.

Here’s what we found:

Business mobile use: Apple’s still on top

What mobile phone do you prefer?

Just like last year, 80% of respondents said they get to use the mobile phone of their choice for business purposes. And when asked the question, “If you could use only one mobile phone for both work and personal, which would you want to use?” people still named Apple’s iPhone as their favorite. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Last year, 59% of respondents said they prefered Apple, 34% said Android, and 4% said BlackBerry. This year, Apple is still the most popular at 56% over Android (38%). BlackBerry use is dwindling: Only 2% of people use BlackBerry phones for business purposes, compared with last year’s 4%.
  • The top two industries in which people don’t get to choose their mobile device for work? Healthcare/pharmaceuticals and government. Last year, the top categories were finance/insurance and manufacturing.
  • Although only 39% of last year’s respondents said they received IT support for their mobile device through work, this year’s respondents reported even less. Even though 69% of people use their mobile phone for business purposes, only 32% get IT support for their mobile phone at work.

Personal mobile use: Don’t leave a message (unless it’s a text)

When it comes to personal use, what are people using mobile phones for most? Actual phone calls? Try again. Talking is so last year:

  • In 2013, respondents said they were most likely to use their mobile phone for phone calls (35%), messaging (28%), email (19%), surfing the Internet (9%), and apps (9%). This year, people said they use their mobile phone mostly for messaging (41%), followed by phone calls (29%), email (13%), apps (9%), and surfing the Internet (7%).

But age continues to make a big difference. Though messaging is most popular on the whole, its popularity decreases as mobile phone users get older:

  • Last year, people aged 18 to 29 said they used their mobile phones mostly for messaging (44%), and this year, it’s even more popular (59%). Also, 18 to 29-year-olds to are the most likely to use their mobile phone mainly for apps (14%), just like last year (12%).
  • In 2014, those aged 30 to 44 said they prefer messaging (45%), compared with last year’s 29%. Making phone calls (45%) has finally become more popular than messaging (28%) with those aged 45 to 60. And for those over 60, making phone calls is the most popular for primary use (54%) but is still followed up with messaging at 25%.
  • Just like last year, iPhone is the most popular phone across age groups.

Bye bye, BlackBerry – Hello iPhone

However, “meet u @ 7” has its limitations. Where messaging is definitely not the most popular? At work. People who use phones for business split their use between email (37%) and phone calls (37%). It’s no secret that BlackBerry isn’t as popular as it was a few years ago, but we wanted to know why.

  • Of those who said they once owned or used, but ultimately quit BlackBerry, it’s mainly because of a lack of available apps (13%) and screen size (12%). “Other” responses (46%) mainly cited a company-wide switch to another product like an iPhone or Android device.
  • Just over half of those who said they switched from a BlackBerry, either because of a personal or company decision, went to an iPhone (51%), while 46% went to an Android phone.

But BlackBerry’s greatest strength hasn’t changed. Last year, the people who still used BlackBerry said their favorite feature was email (43%), which is about the same this year (40%).

The future of BYOD and beyond

What tablet computer do you prefer?

Another BYOD mobile trend on its way up? Tablet devices! 54% of respondents who own or use a tablet device say they use that tablet for business purposes. (Though only 14% say their workplace provides them with one.)

  • When asked, “Which tablet computer do you prefer to own or use?” over half of the respondents mentioned an Apple product like “iPad,” at about 56%. The rest of the responses were spread out among “Kindle,” “Samsung”, “Android,” and “Windows.”
  • And when it comes to future smartphone trends, 21% of respondents said plan to upgrade or switch their mobile phone this year. Looks like it’s going to be a close race for Apple versus its competitors. Of those who are upgrading or switching their phone this year, 38% are for iPhone, and 38% are for an Android device.
