This year’s summer blockbuster season has started with a home run. Marvel’s The Avengers just broke the all-time opening weekend box office with a $207 million start. In barely 2 weeks, it has crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide sales. Intrigued, we here at SurveyMonkey wanted to join the fun and find out which of this summer’s movies you are most excited about seeing.
With a little help from SurveyMonkey’s multimedia features and SurveyMonkey Audience, we were able to hone in on the public’s movie preferences. First, we embedded images and videos from the movies we were asking about to provide context and make each survey come to life. Then, SurveyMonkey Audience provided us with a sample of over 300 American movie goers, so we could ask them about their preferences.
What we learned
What Do You Most Want to See?
There were so many amazing films out this year that we had trouble fitting them into our survey. Here are the 10 we’re most excited to see (and the ones we asked about in our survey), in no particular order: Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, The Avengers, Dark Shadows, Brave, Snow White & the Huntsman, Bourne Legacy, The Amazing Spider Man, Men in Black III, Total Recall
Without further ado, here are the results of what the public is looking forward to seeing:
SurveyMonkey Audience’s 3 MOST Anticipated Movies:
1) Men in Black III
3) Dark Shadow
While those loveable secret agents came out on top, respondents weren’t so happy with the work of Gotham’s favorite vigilante, Batman. Here were the top three movies respondents said that they were least likely to see.
SurveyMonkey Audience’s 3 LEAST Likely to See:
1) Dark Knight Rises
This caught us by surprise, given that The Dark Knight Returns (the prequel to Dark Knight Rises) was deemed both a critical and commercial success.
Why You Go To the Movies
Next we switched gears and tried to learn about what motivates the public to go to the movies.
Which of the following factors is MOST influential in your decision to see a summer blockbuster?
Special effects played a small role in your decision. Actors, directors, and writers were virtually non-existent in the decision process.
At the end of the day, the story was the most important factor, regardless of whether or not the respondents were watching a sequel.
Views on 3D
Not surprisingly, respondents opinions about 3D movies were also mixed. Most of our respondents (57%) were not very excited about 3D movies, especially the prospect of paying more to see them in iMax.
And over 25% of our respondents appear to be unsure if it’s better to watch a movie in 3D.
No trip to the movies would be complete without utter disregard for your caloric intake. We wanted to know about preferred favorite guilty pleasures at the movies, in both food and candy categories.
Not surprisingly popcorn was the hands down winner, with 74% of respondents identifying it as their favorite food.
In the candy category, respondents were much more mixed. With an incredible array of options literally at your fingertips, survey takers passionately weighed in.
Although Junior Mints (15%) and M&Ms(16%) led the pack, many more of respondents called out that we were missing their favorites. Thanks to Survey Monkey’s text analysis feature we pulled out some obvious missing winners:
Using this innovative feature, you can quickly see (chocolate-covered) trends that might otherwise be missed.
Movie Riddle – Bonus Question
By this point we were having way too much fun with this survey for our own good. We asked respondents to look at the picture below and answer the following.
“Can you guess what 2012 Summer Blockbuster is shown in the following screenshot?”
2) Amazing Spiderman
3) Dark Knight Rises
4) Men In Black III
5) Total Recall
42% of respondents guessed the answer to this tricky question correctly. Answer: “Men in Black III.”
However we also said there was extra credit for describing your thought process and we got some great responses!
Actual Survey Responses
- It appears to be a phantasm in a Chinese restaurant. That would be consistent with MIB and perhaps Dark Knight or Total Recall. Not so much with Spiderman or the Avengers.
- A lot of red, takes place on Mars.
- It looks like alien goo so it must be MIB III
- The building looks like one that Spiderman would climb up.
- Looks “magic-y”
Thanks for your time and participation in our 2012 Summer Movie Blockbuster poll. We hope you have a great summer and see lots of good movies. Let us know which you love (and which ones bombed) in the comment section below. Thanks!
