Our Facebook Survey App is Here

Facebook is a great place to survey your friends, fans, and customers–right where they’re already hanging out. In 2010, we introduced our Facebook collector, and have seen many customers use it as an easy way to share their surveys on Facebook.

As with everything we do, we asked you what else you wanted to see. And you told us: “How about the ability to add a survey right onto a Facebook Page?”

So we got busy and built a Facebook app that allows you to do just that.

Yup, with any SurveyMonkey plan (including our free plan) you can now add a survey directly to your Facebook Page. Ask your fans what they want to hear from you. Ask your customers what deals you should offer. Quickly poll people on the hot topic of the day. It’s a great way to engage your audience, gather their feedback, and keep them on your page. But best of all, all the data you gather is easy to analyze and in a format you can really use (no more having to scroll through tons of comments to glean insights!).

If you’re not familiar with Facebook Pages, they’re a way for businesses, musicians, celebrities, and products to have a place on Facebook where they can interact with their fans. Learn more about how to set up a page here. And check out the SurveyMonkey Page as an example (and see some happy monkeys while you’re there).

How to Add a Survey to Your Facebook Page

If you’re ready to add a survey to your Facebook Page, all you need to do is:

1. Connect your Facebook account to your SurveyMonkey account (from your My Account page).

2.    Add the SurveyMonkey Facebook application to your Page. Please note – you cannot add this app to your personal wall, it must be added to a Facebook Page (e.g. for a product, business, etc).

3.    Create your survey in SurveyMonkey.

4.    Create a Facebook Page collector for your survey.

5.    Select the survey you’d like to display from the SurveyMonkey application on your Facebook Page.

That’s all you need to do to add a survey to your Facebook Page. The tab for your survey will have it’s own URL, so don’t forget to post it to your feed (and encourage your fans to forward it along) to make sure people take it.

Check out our Help Center article for more details on this new feature.

To see this in action, take the survey we’re running a survey on our Page right now:

We’d love to hear how you use this new feature to survey your fans on Facebook, so please share in the comments below.

Hi, I added the app to my Facebook page but when I click on it I get a blank screen with the header Coffee News Ireland Survey Monkey. I’ve linked my accounts and setup a Facebook Page collector, can you help?

    • Tim CH

Hi Richard – I checked your page and it looked okay to me. Are you an admin of your page? Please try going there again and seeing what happens now.

  • http://www.gpts.edu Garry Moes

I’m having the same problem as Richard had. I can post a link to my survey on my wall, but no survey is embedded on the SurveyMonkey app page I created. Using Internet Explorer, a message briefly appeared saying we are running no surveys at the moment, come back later. But using other browsers that message doesn’t even show up.

Also please provide instructions for removing the SM app if needed.

    • Tim CH

Garry and Richard – my apologies, it turns out there are some issues with browsers with third-party cookies disabled. IE 7 and IE 8 both have third-party cookies disabled by default. If you could try a different browser (with third-party cookies enabled) for now if possible, it should work. We will have a fix out shortly.

  • http://socialicia.com Alicia Vaz

I was so glad to see this, been wanting this for a while from you guys. I’m going to give it a run shortly. I’ve used PollDaddy in the past, curious to see how this compares. Thanks!

  • http://www.JerseyFamilyFun.com Jennifer Auer

I am having the same issue as Richard above. I can’t get the survey to load up to the Facebook page http://www.Facebook.com/JerseyFamilyFun

  • http://www.JerseyFamilyFun.com Jennifer Auer

And I am using the Mozilla Firefox browser, but get just a blank page with the Jersey Family Fun > Survey Monkey at the top.

    • http://www.surveymonkey.com Bennett P

Make sure your third party cookies are turned on. It turns out there is an issues with certain Facebook Apps requiring third-party cookies to work – unfortunately the SurveyMonkey app is affected by this problem. IE9, Chrome, Firefox all have this switched on by default (IE 6, 7 and 8 do not), but it is possible to disable them which will stop the app from working. We are working on a fix for the issue we should have out soon.

In the meantime, if you would like a temporary workaround, you can enable third-party cookies in one of your browsers. Do let us know if that helps.

  • http://www.bigdotmedia.co.uk Steve McGrath

Update: It doesn work in IE7, IE8, Safari 5 (PC), Chrome 13, or Firefox 5. There are issue across the board here chaps!!

Will the survey embedded in Facebook work in safari (iPad) and Firefox? You only mention ie7 & 8 above.

    • Tim CH

Hi Derek – yes, it works fine in Firefox and mobile Safari (iPad and iPhone).

  • Peter Hewitt

Can we get a survey going to lobby these tv programme makers tro cut out this awful back ground music people who are hard of hearing find it very annoying even people with good hearing complain.

  • https://hopeinwoodland.wordpress.com Anjan Sen

Is this form available only on premium acccounts ? Not available for free account ?

    • Tim CH

Anjan – It is available for all account types.

  • Jim Seybert

Great idea – and another reason why I’ve been a Monkey fan for 10+ years.
Question – I run surveys for a few of my clients. Is it possible for me to run the survey on my Pro account and have the link appear on the client’s Facebook fan page?

    • Tim CH

Jim – yes, it is possible to run the survey on your pro account and have it appear on your client’s Facebook fan page. They will simply need to make you an admin of that page.

  • http://www.integrativehealthcarepa.com Nicole K

I just can’t get past the part where I am to choose the survey and link them together…Everytime I choose my survey, the instructions don’t walk me through the steps correctly…

    • Tim CH

Nicole – once you choose the survey, you then need to pick your collector (or create one) and hit apply. If you need further help please reach out to support@surveymonkey.com.

  • Geoff De Weaver

    Dear SurveyMonkey folks,

Do you plan on releasing this type of service on LinkedIn too? As I personally have my “business and academic” connections on this platform…sure you would to use LinkedIn as opposed to Facebook if possible.

I even think the research would be taken more seriously.

    Look forward to your response.

    • Tim CH

Geoff – we are planning to support better LinkedIn integration, but don’t have a fixed timeline yet.

  • Luke S

This looks great. However, Is it possible to embed only the results of your survey in face book and not the survey itself? I would like to show the current results of an on going survey on my face book page. Any thoughts?

    • Tim CH

Luke – you can use instant results to show the results of a survey, but the person still needs to take the survey to see the results.

PS: I love the simplicity of the design on SurveyMonkey.

  • Helen

I have a problem of log in the SurveyMonkey with my Facbook account. Does anyone know how to solve the problem? I really need to log in with my fb account to be able to get my data from previous survey…

    • Tim CH

Helen – please send an email to support@surveymonkey.com, they should be able to assist you. Please send them the name of the survey (if you remember it) and your primary email address associated with your Facebook account.

  • Muhammad Arham

Thank you very much for providing me with a good service. Although my questionnaire collection is already done, there is one thing I would like to ask in this forum: Would it be possible to have a complex survey on facebook (that it, a survey with some skip logic questions)?

Thank you very much for your kind assistance.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Muhammad Arham

    • Tim Cederman-Haysom

Muhammad – yes it is. All our in-survey features are supported for Facebook.

  • http://flatworldknowledge.com Michelle OBrien

Set up your Facebook app and embedded our survey on our page, but when we click on the SHARE button, nothing is happening. Any ideas? This feature is key. Thanks!

    • Tim Cederman-Haysom

Michelle – if you are testing the share link from the collector page, it won’t do anything. It will work on an active survey though – I took a look at yours and it worked fine for me when I tried it from your Facebook page.

  • Ken Whitehurst

Does the Facebook collector collect Facebook friend names? Or are all the responses anonymous?
Is the problem solved now with all browsers? No point in putting up a survey that people have to know to go into their browser settings to be able to answer.
    Full status update?

    • Tim Cederman-Haysom

Ken – the Facebook collector does not collect Facebook friend names. The responses are as anonymous as you’d like them to be (it is the same as any other SurveyMonkey survey)

The problem with all browsers is solved.

  • http://mfa-cpa.com Jef

    1) Is there are way for a survey user to share the results to their wall?
    2) Is there a way for an administrator to share all results to the Fan Page?

I would like to have a survey that ends with.
    a) Would you like to share this?
    b) May we post your comments to our Fan Page?

    • Tim Cederman-Haysom

At this time, the only way to share the results is using our instant results feature for the survey. This will allow survey takers to see the results after they have finished the survey.

The only other way you could do this is ask for permission and then manually add comments/results to your fan page.

  • http://www.chattimeapp.com Charles Tidwell

Anyway to host multiple surveys simultaneously?

    • Tim Cederman-Haysom

Charles – unfortunately it’s only possible to do have one survey per Facebook page.

I have read through your reply on how to reward respondents to a survey, only to find it is limited to the US. Are there any plans to operate it it the UK.
Also the question banks are great, but is there any way for us to write our own questions?
You offer a great service, and free too, amazing.

        • Kayte K

Hi Andy- thank you for the support and great questions! At this time, we don’t have a timeline for international rewards but keep checking here for any updates on that.

Questions in our Question Bank are all written and certified by our survey methodologists in order to help you avoid receiving biased responses however if you’re interested in sharing questions for the Bank, send a note to support@surveymonkey.com and they can forward on for review.

If you need more responses, we offer our Select plan with unlimited responses and monthly billing. Check out our options here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/pricing/details Thanks!

We’re not exactly sure what the trouble is, but you could try re-linking your FB and SM accounts and clear your cookies. Or, try a new browser.

Also, make sure you have the latest app installed, which can be found here:

Sorry for the trouble. Good luck and let us know if you’re still having trouble.

    • Hanna J

Hi Ashley – Sorry about that! There is no consistent problem on our end. Because we’re having a hard time recreating the problem, it’s a bit tricky to fix it. We are working on it, though. Our best advice is to unlink, and relink your accounts, and try again. We hope that works for you. Let us know if you’re still having issues, and we’ll suggest another work around. Thanks!

I, too, get discouraged with being not quiiafled:. It gets to the point where I just delete from my email without even trying. I especially dislike those surveys that take you through 6 or 7 minutes of answers, and THEN tell you that you are not quiiafled!

How do you change the tab text for the Survey Monkey Facebook tab? It just says Survey Monkey which doesn’t really tell people much about the survey itself. I see on your example, yours says “Take our survey” so I assume this text is editable. Can you help?

    Thanks a lot!

    • Kate L

Ah, have answered my own question! Anyone else interested in finding out, can see here: https://help.surveymonkey.com/euf/assets/docs/pdf/FacebookUpdate.pdf

      • Hanna J

Hey Kate – Thanks for sharing, and for being such a good detective. We’re making you an honorary SurveyMonkey. Have a great day!

    • Hanna J

Hi Kate – Great question! You’re right, you can edit this tab text.

      1. Go to the “edit page” tab on any page you’re an admin of, and select “update info”
      2. On the left tool bar select “apps”
      3. Go to our app and click “edit settings”
      4. You’ll be able to change the tab name right there

Let us know if you have any more questions. Thank you!

  • Brad

I like the idea of running a survey concurrently, on our website and Facebbook, using multiple collectors. The problem for us is that we tend to run single question essay/text box response surveys. That question type doesn’t show on the instant results option. I’ve been playing around with a couple options to get respondents a results display for this type of survey, but nothing seems very satisfying. Any suggestions?

    • Bennett P

      Hi Brad -

First, THANKS for using SurveyMonkey! One idea is instead of posting instant results, you could develop a thanks page that tells respondents when you’ll be sharing the results on your FB page (or via email – however you’re planning on releasing the findings). The survey can help you build content and by letting respondents know when you’ll be sharing results could build repeat traffic. Another idea is to capture their email address at the end of the survey and email them the results or alert them to goto your FB page to read the latest…

Hope this helps! Thanks for your question.

Hi Lukasz! One trick is to refresh your page after you’ve linked up the FB app. If that doesn’t work though, here are our step-by-steps: http://help.surveymonkey.com/articles/en_US/kb/How-do-I-use-the-Facebook-Embed-Collector

Let me know if that does the trick!

Ugh! Sorry for the frustration, Tim. I’ll reach out to our developers and will get back to you asap. Thanks for your patience.

First off, I received a kind and prompt response from your support team. Thank you for that.

Unfortunately, though, I found out “that it is a stipulation of Facebook’s that when you use an app, you need to be acting as your own profile instead of a page.”

This limits the usefulness of SurveyMonkey’s Facebook collectors for Pages. While it is possible to get a survey on the app within the Page, it is difficult to let your Page’s audience know about it.

Bottom line: Facebook needs to allow admins to utilize apps from their Pages.

Amir – That is not currently an option, but it’s a great suggestion! Thanks for the feedback. I’ve passed it on to our developers. Have a great week!
