Slight Bump Up in Trump Approval as Public Focuses on North Korea Threat

Bumping back up from an all-time low, 41 percent of Americans now approve of the way Donald Trump is handling the presidency, according to the new SurveyMonkey weekly tracking poll.

His overall approval number is up two points on the week, driven primarily by a modest recovery for President Trump among Republicans, whose support for the GOP commander-in-chief had been waning. His disapproval rating dipped by two percentage points as well, leveling at 57 percent.

Curious about why people approve (or not) of the job the president is doing? So were we, so we gave people the chance to tell us. About 10,000 responded, in their own words; see the results here.

As Trump doubles down on a bellicose stance toward North Korea, the war of words is reverberating in public sentiment. A majority of Americans (56%) see North Korea as posing the greatest immediate danger to the United States, relative to the threat from ISIS, Russia, China, and Iran. Two-thirds (65%) say they feel less safe regarding North Korea than they did a year ago. Both numbers are up significantly just in the past few weeks.
