XBox One vs. PS4: Consumers Weigh In

Shakedown on Video GamesBig news for video game lovers–For the first time in seven years, both Microsoft and Sony have brand new consoles on the market. Microsoft’s Xbox One hit shelves Friday for $500 and a week earlier, the Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) arrived for $400.

Both products are offering major new features. Microsoft wants the Xbox One to be the go-to entertainment system in consumers’ living rooms. In other words, it’s not just about Call of Duty: Ghosts. The PS4 has received a complete design makeover but unlike the Xbox, is sticking with what it knows best–video games.

So. The survey question here seems clear…Which of these two consoles are video game fans excited about the most? Will people be lining up in droves to purchase or not? Using SurveyMonkey Audience–a powerful online product designed to collect data from a target audience–we asked 450 video game players their opinions on these new consoles. Our CEO, Dave Goldberg, stopped by Bloomberg West to chat with Emily Chang to share the results.

You can check out their full segment here and below is a snapshot of the data.

Are consumers excited about this product news? Not so much.

  • More than half (54%) say they’re really not excited about either system.
  • XBox vs. PS4? XBox comes out on top with 22% of respondents choosing to go the Microsoft way over PlayStation (15%).
  • No consoles under the tree this year! A whopping 75% of folks say they’re not at all likely to purchase the PS4 as a holiday gift and even more (78%) are taking a holiday pass on purchasing the Xbox One.

Cost is the primary reason for the lack of purchasing excitement.

  • Perhaps unsurprisingly, the price of each is cited as the #1 reason to say no to both.
  • Nearly 70% of video game fans have no plans for purchasing the PS4. 21% are on the fence and aren’t sure yet if they’ll buy or not.
  • Another reason? 22% simply prefer to use their mobile device/PC to play games. More on that below!

However, gamers do want upgrades to their existing consoles.

  • 20% of Xbox 360 owners plan on purchasing Xbox One.
  • Even more PlayStation 3 owners want to upgrade to the PS4 (37%).

More gamers prefer to play on their phones vs. the console.

  • Although the gaming experience with the console is still a better one, playing via mobile is cheaper and easier for people. Over half of both say the best platform for playing games is on a console.
  • Mobile game playing is definitely a player with nearly 60% saying they regularly play at least 1-3 games on their mobile devices.
  • 47% of respondents report playing 1-3 games on their desktop or via computer software.

In a nutshell, those outside of the hardcore gaming community–general consumers–aren’t excited for these shiny new gadgets in the gaming world. While gamers still prefer to use consoles, mobile is growing in popularity.

Gaming companies might need to rethink their marketing strategies as it relates to handheld products and likely, consoles, too. Since cost was also given as a primary reason for consumers to keep wallets in pockets, the major game companies might also reconsider their pricing strategies as mobile games are cheaper than entire video game systems.
