Santa Clara Quality of Life

About the Survey

The Santa Clara County 2012 Quality of Life Survey was created through a joint effort by the County of Santa Clara’s Planning Office, Public Health Department, United Way Silicon Valley, Raimi + Associates and San José State University’s Survey and Policy Research Institute. An expert team collaborated to develop, distribute, and analyze the results of the anonymous and confidential survey, which has received over 2,200 responses to date. The survey opened in mid-May of this year and will close on July 1, 2012.

The survey is composed of the following topics:

  1. Economic Conditions
  2. Health and Wellness
  3. Safe Neighborhoods and Schools
  4. Transportation and Mobility
  5. Quality of Life and Community Participation
  6. Demographics

Survey results will be used to inform the County of Santa Clara’s General Plan Health Element and the 2012 Santa Clara County Community Assessment Project, to develop policies and programs that improve health, wellness, safety, equity, and the overall quality of life in the County.

About Santa Clara County

The County of Santa Clara, California – also known as the “Silicon Valley” – is located at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay Area and encompasses 1,290 square miles. The County consists of 1.78 million residents* in 15 cities, including San Jose, Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale.

Using SurveyMonkey’s Language Options

The County’s population is as diverse as its physical landscape. According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, 47% are White, 32% are Asian and 26.9% are of Hispanic or Latino origin. For this reason, a crucial goal of the survey is to reach out to as many diverse groups as possible. In order to do so, the survey team utilized SurveyMonkey’s language options, which made it possible to translate the survey and make it available for respondents in four languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin.

Tying in SurveyMonkey with Social Media for Distribution

The Quality of Life Survey is currently being distributed throughout Santa Clara County with help from the County’s Public Affairs Office, the Board of Supervisors, Valley Medical Center, community groups, city agencies, colleges and universities, state legislators, regional organizations, United Way Silicon Valley members, and multi-cultural local media outlets.

Additionally, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s newly-formed Communications Team and the Planning Office’s Health Element Team disseminated the Quality of Life Survey using various digital communication strategies. A web banner and dedicated web page was created for the survey and located on the Public Health Department’s website, where respondents could learn more about the survey and access the SurveyMonkey link. View the SurveyMonkey link on the Public Health Department’s website and the Planning Office’s Health Element project website.

The Public Health Department and Planning Office mass-distributed the Quality of Life SurveyMonkey link through social media tools such as Facebook and MailChimp. You can view the SurveyMonkey link on the Public Health Department’s Facebook page and on the General Plan Health Element Facebook page.
