Hungry for More? A SurveyMonkey Audience Review of "The Hunger Games"

Hungry for More? A SurveyMonkey Audience Review of "The Hunger Games"

Last weekend, The Hunger Games, based on the acclaimed novel by Suzanne Collins, burst onto the silver screen with an entrance worthy of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) herself.

Since its release on March 23, in the U.S., The Hunger Games pulled in a total of $181 million—making it the biggest non-sequel release in history.

Here at SurveyMonkey, we’ve been buzzing about the movie, its literary predecessor, and—most importantly—where to find Cinna’s (Lenny Kravitz) crazy-cool gold eyeliner. Since everyone had such strong opinions about the film, we decided to open up the discussion to the public.

We used SurveyMonkey Audience to gather feedback from 200 respondents, and the results suggest that the future of the franchise is likely to have the odds ever in its favor.

Prior to the film’s release, it already had an army of devoted fans—readers of the book series have been clamoring about their devotion long before the movie debut. Since a whopping 66% of respondents polled had read the novel before seeing the movie, we decided to perform a little cross-tabbing magic to see the differences in responses between those who had read the book and those who hadn’t.

The film certainly received a warm reception from fans of the books, with 90% of respondents reporting that they liked the film! Not only that, but almost half (47.5%) of those who read the books would see the film in theaters for a second time! Not surprisingly, 91.3% of them plan to see the next movie in the series.

In the meantime, most fans of the books (78.9%) intend to get their Hunger Games fix by purchasing the DVD, Blu-ray, or digital download while they wait for the next Reaping.

But the appeal of the film isn’t limited to fans of Suzanne Collins’ book. Even among viewers who had never read the novel, 83% gave the film a favorable review. While those not already invested in the series were less likely to be willing to see the film in theaters again (29.3%), the hook has been set. They may not all be planning on running out to pick up DVDs (29.3%) or Blu-ray (19.5%), but 68.3% plan on seeing the next movie in the series.

When asked who their favorite characters were, Katniss Everdeen, protagonist extraordinaire, led pack with 47.1%, with Woody Harrelson’s portrayal of Haymitch Abernathy coming in a distant second at 9.9%.

While Gale Hawthorne’s (Liam Hemsworth) more limited screen time might account for a greater percentage of viewers preferring Peeta Mellark’s (Josh Hutcherson) character (3.3% versus 5.8%), Liam Hemsworth can be comforted by his crushing victory on a far more pivotal question: “who’s hotter?” (65% v. 35%)

What did you think of The Hunger Games? Are you planning on seeing the next film? Are there any current events you’d like us to gauge public opinion on? Sound off in the comments section below.
