3 Ways to Make Survey Analysis Easier With Filters

A good filter can help you unlock insights from your survey while saving you a lot of work when analyzing your data. And who doesn’t like to be smart while doing less work?

There are three main ways you can filter your survey results with SurveyMonkey. You can filter based on:
1) Responses
2) Properties
3) Collectors

We’ll walk through how and when you can use each one to get more out of your surveys.

Filter by Responses

Say you want to know what the differences are in employee satisfaction based on the department your employees work in. You can ask respondents a question where they select their department.  Then simply create a filter based on responses to that question and you can see if people in Sales really are more satisfied with the company than people in Finance.

Filter by Properties

Want to see if people who answered your market research survey on a Monday respond differently than people who answered on a Saturday? You can create a filter by the Response Date property to determine that. We collect the Response Date field for you, so no extra work on your part. (See, we do the work while you look smart).

Filter by Collector

If you want to send the same survey to different groups of people, you can create separate survey collectors. Say you have fans on Facebook, followers on Twitter, and readers on your blog (we know you’re popular!) and you want to see if there are differences in what type of content they want you to share. You can create one survey to gather input on content ideas that has three collectors: a Facebook collector for your fans, a weblink for Twitter, and an embedded survey for your blog. You can then review all your feedback in aggregate, or create a filter by collector and see how your fans, followers and readers differ.

    I’ve found filters incredibly useful for our data requirements, due to the amount of different collectors we use for the same survey. However, when downloading the data, could I make the suggestion that the name of the .zip file is made up using the name of the filter used and the date of download. This would be very beneficial as we often download groups of different data from filters and it can be quite easy to forget what you’ve just downloaded.

    Thanks for the info. Do you know if more than 1 filter can be applied at once? I want to analyze my results by both the collectors and a specific response.

    • Hi Niki–yes, you can apply more than one filter at a time. To filter by response and collector, you should:
      1. Configure the Filter by Response criteria.
      2. Next, click the [Filter by Collector] option to refine the filter by specific collectors. Clicking the link will open a list of current collectors.
      3. Select the collector(s) you want to include in the analysis of results.
      4. Once you have selected the collector(s), click [Save Changes].
