The Bicentennial of the War of 1812, the 200th anniversary of the war, will occur from 2012-2015. Ohio played a prominent role in the western theater of war contributing both men and supplies to the war effort. Ohio was the front line during the early years of the war and the location of major battles (Fort Meigs, Fort Stephenson, Lake Erie) as well as numerous skirmishes. In addition, several forts and supply depots were established to maintain a vital supply network throughout the state. Several of these former fortifications became the nucleus of new communities, which were established at the end of hostilities. Ohio was deeply impacted by the war, with many Ohioans serving in the military or experiencing first-hand the horrors and hardships of battle. The Ohio War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission, signed into law by Governor Strickland, seeks to provide assistance and coordination to communities across Ohio who wish to commemorate the War of 1812’s 200th anniversary, we hope you will help us by shaping the initiative with your input.
