Measuring the relationship between self-esteem and drive for muscularity in men

My name is Matthew Condie and I am completing my Honours psychology degree at the University of Ballarat. As part of my course, I am to carry out a research project. The focus of my research is on what men think about their size and shape of their bodies, their health and fitness, and how they feel about themselves as people.

I invite you to participate in this study. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to take your time completing the questionnaires. Completing the questionnaires will be considered as consent to participate in the study. The questionnaires will include questions about how you feel about your body, feelings about yourself as a person, and thoughts and feelings about exercise, health and fitness. The questionnaires will take around 15 minutes to complete. If you find answering the questions uncomfortable, you may stop filling them out at any time.

You are free to discontinue participation from the study at any time. Your information will remain anonymous throughout the study. The data will be securely stored and the information you provide will not be identifiable. If you wish to see the results of this research study, I will send out the findings upon request and the aggregated results may be used for research purposes (e.g. reported in scientific and academic journals).

It is not expected that answering any of the questions will cause you any distress, however, if at any time you are uncomfortable, or if participating in this study causes any distress, please let me know. I can refer you (or you can contact directly) Lifeline 131114. Alternatively, you can contact the University of Ballarat Psychology Clinic: (03) 5327-9841, or your local GP.

Please do not fill out the questionnaires until you have a full understanding of what is being asked of you. This project has received clearance by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) project A10-049.

Please remember to fill out all questions.
