UEA sustainable building exemplar
1. Introduction
InCrops is developing plans to promote and disseminate best practice in the application of natural materials in construction through the construction and operation of an ‘exemplar building’ at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich.
The new centre will bring together the enterprise activities of UEA and Norwich Research Park (NRP), host the low carbon activities of the University and provide the headquarters for the InCrops Enterprise Hub in a new business-facing centre.
It is anticipated that the building will have a footprint of 3000 square metres and will have several unique attributes in its development, design, construction and post construction monitoring:
• designed for and built using natural innovative materials
• low embodied energy
• local sourcing and supply chains
• testing and evaluation of materials in situ with changing elements
• innovative design to capture the material properties
• exceed BREEAM HE and establish new standards
• exemplify Cradle to Cradle philosophy
• provide thorough design and architectural development and effective enterprise space for companies
• provide an information resource on new materials in the built environment
A central feature of the project is to provide a centre for reflective practice and learning for the business and professional community to utilise and roll out.
