Schoolies: Parents' attitudes and beliefs II
 

Information Sheet for Parents

 
STUDY BACKGROUND:
Schoolies is a celebration of the end of school, where large numbers of young people congregate often in coastal areas. The project aims to investigate parents’ perceptions about Schoolies, and how parents prepare their adolescent for Schoolies. The information collected will be used to inform future prevention programs targeting binge drinking by young people during celebrations.


PARTICIPATION:
All parents with a teenager who are attending Year 11, Year 12, or have just completed year 12 are invited to complete an online survey addressing parent's attitudes and beliefs about Schoolies, and preparation for Schoolies.

The online survey will take approximately 10 minutes. We appreciate that your time is valuable. At the completion of the online survey, you will be provided with a link to a fact sheet containing some information you might like to discuss with your teenager before they attend Schoolies. If you would like enter the draw for an IPod Nano, please enter your email address on a separate webpage at the end of this survey. In order to preserve the anonymity of your data, the email address you provided will be stored separately from your survey response. Your data cannot be linked to your email address.

CONFIDENTIALITY
Participation in this study is voluntary. You can withdraw from the survey at any time without giving a reason for doing so. All information given will be confidential. No information will be given to anyone outside the research team. All online survey will be collected anonymously and stored on a secure server. All information will be stored under lock and key at the Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research, The University of Queensland, and we will destroy all questionnaire responses after 5 years.

At the end of the research, parents will be able to request a copy of the findings by contacting CYSAR directly on 07 3346 4834 or email cysar@uq.edu.au, and findings may be published in an academic journal. No identifying information will be published in any report or journal publication. These reports and publications will only involve general research findings – no individual information will be included.

We do not expect that participation will cause any problems. This study has been cleared by the human ethics committee of The University of Queensland in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council's guidelines. You are of course, free to discuss your participation in this study with the research team(contactable on 07 3346 4834). If you would like to speak to an officer of the University not involved in the study, you may contact the Ethics Officer on 07 3365 3924.

The first draw for an iPod Nano was completed on the 15th of March 2011. Congratulations to the parent who have won the iPod Nano.

The next iPod Nano will be drawn on the 15th of March 2012.
