Shalom:

Thank you for your interest in becoming a pioneer Rakaz T'fillah. At the heart of the Camp Ramah in California mission is the goal to help chanichim and tzevet develop a sense of spirituality, and t'fillah is one of the core modes of experiencing this connection to Jewish tradition and to God.

While there are so many Jewish values and practices that are successfully programmed into the summer experience, t'fillah is an area where a majority of our tzevet struggle to engage chanichim. Madrichim reference a number of reasons why t'fillah is challenging ranging from a lack of familiarity with the words, music, choreography and meaning of fixed prayer to a more general struggle with the structure of t'fillah itself. While there are always examples of innovation and awesome t'fillah experiences, more often t'fillot can be low energy, disorganized and not led in accordance with the framework provided by Conservative Judaism. As a result, many of our chanichim are not as equipped to participate in and lead minyanim outside of camp as we hope.

Our 2011 Rakazei T'fillah will ensure that t'fillot are led in a way that reflects the framework provided by Conservative Judaism - from the appropriate nusach to be used during daily Shachrit to a well oiled Torah service. Each Rakaz T'fillah will be matched with a different edah. Specific responsibilities may include:

1. Lead t'fillot on occasion in order to provide an example of a fully confident shaliach tzibur

2. Ensure that chanichim and madrichim chosen to lead are comfortable with the matbeah - words, nusach and choreography

3. Coordinate the Torah service

4. Ensure that those chosen to lead t'fillot for the camp on erev Shabbat are prepared

5. Provide resources as needed on the meaning of t'fillah to chanichim and madrichim who are giving a drash or designing creative t'fillot

6. Ensure that special rituals are integrated into t'fillot as they arise - Rosh Chodesh, Shabbat Nachamu, etc.

Rakazei T'fillah will be individuals who have demonstrated the following leadership skills: a) ability to lead t'fillot b) take initiative c) public speaking d) organization. Those chosen will work under the guidance of our Rosh T'fillah.
