PIA Code of Conduct
1. Introduction
All members of PIA are bound by the PIA Code of Professional Conduct (Code). The purpose of the Code is to establish minimum standards of professional behaviour, guidance and support to planning practitioners in Australia and overseas. This is to ensure that they practice their profession with the highest ethical and professional standards and earn the confidence and respect of the profession, their peers and the community they serve.
At the November 2009 National Council meeting, it was agreed that a review of the Code was timely. It was last reviewed in August 2002 and a number of contemporary issues need to be incorporated into the Code to reflect the dynamic nature of the planning profession. The Code will also need to be consistent with the new governance structure.
Review of the Code is proposed in three stages:
1. A re-write to incorporate contemporary language and issues. The review will be informed by both this short online survey to gain feedback from members, and a review of other Code relevant issues.
2. A comprehensive review of the procedures and penalties for a breach of the Code.
3. A professional practice manual (similar to that published by the Canadian Institute of Planners).
It is anticipated that Stage 1 of the revised Code could be published and ready for presentation at the National Congress in 2011.
Responses to this survey will assist PIA to review the Code and to evaluate the need for and benefits of a campaign to promote the Code and its relevance to members.
This survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to help with this project. Your feedback is very welcome.
