1. Agreement to Participate in Research

Responsible Investigators: Shannon Merrill (SJSU graduate student) & Sean Laraway, Ph.D. (faculty supervisor)

Title of Study: An Investigation of Personality and Pet Ownership

1. You have been asked to participate in a research study investigating different aspects of your personality and pet ownership.

2. You will be asked to respond to a series of anonymous online questionnaires assessing your feelings, opinions, and behaviors. You may complete this study anywhere you have internet access and may take as long as you need to answer each question.

3. You may experience some minor discomfort in answering questions of a sensitive or personal nature. The risks associated with this study are no greater than those encountered in daily life.

4. You are not likely to experience any direct benefits from your participation in this study.

5. Although the results of this study may be published, no information that could identify you will be included. The tracking feature offered by the online host will be disabled and no identifying data will be collected from you.

6. There is no compensation for participating in this study.

7. Questions about this research may be addressed to Shannon Merrill (shannon.merrill@students.sjsu.edu) or Dr. Sean Laraway (sean.laraway@sjsu.edu). Complaints about the research may be presented to Dr. Ronald Rogers, Department Chair, SJSU Department of Psychology, at (408) 924-5652. Questions about a research subjects’ rights, or research-related injury may be presented to Dr. Pamela Stacks, Associate Vice President, Graduate Studies and Research, at (408) 924-2427.

8. No service of any kind, to which you are otherwise entitled, will be lost or jeopardized if you choose not to participate in the study.

9. Your consent is being given voluntarily. You may refuse to participate in the entire study or in any part of the study. You have the right to not answer questions you do not wish to answer. If you decide to participate in the study, you are free to withdraw at any time without any negative effect on your relations with San José State University.
