INFORMATION SHEET: Choice of music and changes in mood
My name is Dr Nick Troop. I am a Psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire undertaking a study into the effects of listening to music on mood states. We are looking to recruit participants who are 18 and over.
If you agree to take part you will be asked to complete a few questionnaires measuring your personality and your current mood.
You will then be asked to listen to one song or piece of music of your choosing. This can be any song – whatever you feel like listening to right now. This might or might not be your favourite song. It might be a different song from one you might have played earlier today ... we really are just interested in what song you feel like listening to right now.
After listening to the song you will be asked to complete the mood measures again and to write about how the song made you feel and what it made you think about.
The questionnaires should take 20-30 minutes to complete although how long the whole study takes will depend on how long the piece of music is that you choose to listen to.
Some of the questionnaires may seem quite similar but they are asking slightly different things. There are no right or wrong answers but please pay careful attention to what the questionnaires are asking you.
We cannot give individualised feedback on people’s results. However, results will be sent in summary form at the end of the study to anyone who is interested.
Any data you provide during this study will remain both confidential and anonymous and will be used only for the purposes outlined here.
You may use the email address below should any questions arise now or in the future so you may wish to print out a copy of this Information Sheet before proceeding.
Please note that any information you supply today will only be used for the purposes outlined here, participation in the study is voluntary and you may withdraw your assistance at any time if you wish and without explanation.
Thank you for your participation.
