Hello!
My name is Vanessa Butterworth and I’m an independent researcher gathering about how coastal residents and workers are coping with the effects of various recent stressful events, e.g. the BP oil spill, the economic downturn, more strict fishing regulations and more latent environmental degradation and contamination.
This project requires me to collect data from people living on the Gulf Coast and on the coast of Georgia. I am, therefore, asking if you would agree to participate by answering a questionnaire. This should take about 15 minutes of your time.
You do not have to participate at all or, even if you agree now, you can terminate your participation at any time without prejudice. You also do not have to answer individual questions you don’t want to answer. Your name is not asked for in this questionnaire, absolutely ensuring that your participation remains confidential.
A benefit you may experience by participating is a greater knowledge of your feelings about current stressful problems. Also, expanding our understanding of the coping process will enable local communities and helping professionals to help those in distress more effectively.
By participating in this study, you risk being upset by some questions, as they might bring back memories of stressful situations you’ve had to face. If you feel uncomfortable during or after the completion of your questionnaire, you can contact me directly at vaness.butterworth@gmail.com or immediately terminate your participation. I can provide you with immediate help or refer you to local places where help is available, if you e-mail me.
If you have any questions or concerns later, please contact me at vaness.butterworth@gmail.com or my supervisor, Dr. Paul Kohn at pkohn@yorku.ca.
