On the Campus of The Ohio State University

In 2009 one hundred teachers from 25 schools/ districts were chosen to participate
in Global Institute 2009 at Kent State University. Building on last year’s successful
institute, the three-day event moves to central Ohio and provides a similar
opportunity for more school teams. Global Institute 2010 is a collaboration among
the Ohio Department of Education, the Office of International Affairs, Area Studies
Centers, and Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University, the Gerald
H. Read Center at Kent State University and the Ohio Geographic Alliance.


Primarily funded by a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and partner
organizations, this event will provide teachers of content areas across the curriculum
the opportunity to:

1. Share best practices in international education.

2. Obtain new resources and tools for internationalizing across the curriculum.

3. Develop an action plan for implementation in their classroom and school.


Eligibility Requirements

Teachers from Ohio schools who teach English language arts, mathematics, science,
social studies, fine arts, world languages, career programs or technology in grades
K-12 may apply. Registration is open to teachers form Ohio schools including charter
schools and career and technical programs.

Priority will be given to teams of teachers from one building, but each team member
must complete the online application individually. Selection will be based on
information included in the application. Lodging will be provided for all participants.


Benefits

The Global Institute will:
  • Supply teachers with materials and methods to share with colleagues in their buildings;
  • Prepare teachers to incorporate new uses of technology in their classroom;
  • Provide optional graduate credit (additional fee);
  • Provide follow-up support during the 2010-2011 school year to help teachers incorporate
    at least one strategy to internationalize curriculum; and
  • Build a network of teachers who support each other as they implement new ideas
    in their classrooms.

Application Instructions

The institute sessions, lodging and most meals will be covered by the grant. Teachers
will be required to pay a $100 registration fee upon receiving a letter of acceptance to
the institute. In addition, the school principal must sign an acceptance form agreeing
to provide participating teachers with the opportunity to share what they learn at the
Global Institute with colleagues in their buildings.
Applications are competitive. Only 100 Ohio teachers will be chosen to attend.
