1. Introduction

Are you a carer?

A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.

Many people do not consider themselves as a carer, but may just see their caring duties as part of their responsibilities to the family or wider community. Anyone can become a carer, and carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any age.

If you think you fit this description, we are really interested in hearing from you. We would like you to help us by taking around 15 minutes to tell us about your current needs as a carer. You do not have to provide your name and address, but if you do choose to at the end of the survey, you will be entered into a PRIZE DRAW TO WIN £50 METRO CENTRE / ELDON SQUARE VOUCHERS.

You have been asked if you would complete this survey because we would like to reach as many carers in the Gateshead community as possible. We feel that you may be acting as an unpaid carer for someone in your life.

Local agencies providing help and advice for carers, as well as those being cared for in the community, will be helping us to circulate the survey. We do apologise if you receive this more than once but please only complete 1 questionnaire if this happens to you.

Additional Support

If you would like help to complete the questionnaire or need it in another format, please ring Judith Dunn on 0191 490 0121 who will try to help you over the phone or may be able to arrange a consultation in person.

In 2010/11, Gateshead Carers Association (GCA) is undertaking a major survey into the lives of carers. GCA wants to gain a better understanding of the needs and issues facing carers in Gateshead. The survey, which is being led by GCA in conjunction with New Skills Consulting, aims to give a clearer picture of the lives of carers in 2010/11 and how recent changes have affected their daily lives. Your feedback is really important because we want carers’ views to influence how future services for carers are developed. The results of the survey will be used by GCA to identify the most important issues facing carers in the borough, and inform GCA’s future funding, activities and campaigning work.

If you would like further information or advice on the issues raised in the survey, or to find out more about general help and support available to carers, contact details for Gateshead Carers Association and other local partners are provided on the final page of the survey.

Confidentiality

Any information you provide (including your contact details to be entered into the prize draw) will remain confidential and no individual will be personally identified. Under no circumstances will your responses be passed on to anyone else (such as anyone providing you or the person you care for with services, if applicable). The answers you give, or choosing not to respond, won’t affect the services that you, or the person you care for receive.

Thank you for helping us by completing this questionnaire.
