INFORMATION SHEET: Functions of Music

My name is Dr Nick Troop. I am a Psychologist in the Psychology of Performing Arts Lab (POPA Lab) at the University of Hertfordshire and I am inviting you to take part in a study into the functions that music has for people.

If you agree to take part you will be asked to describe what function music has for you. In other words, what does music do for you? What do you listen to music for? What is its purpose for you?

There are no right or wrong answers - it's a completely personal experience - so please feel free to write as much or as little as you like. The answers you give will be used to develop a self-report questionnaire to measure the functions of music and this questionnaire will be validated in a separate study. As we want to make this questionnaire as "real" as possible, we may use some of the specific words or expressions that people write in this part of the study. However, there will be no way of identifying any individuals from these expressions.

It is expected that completing this study will take 5-10 minutes but of course that depends on how much you wish to write.

Any information you provide will remain both confidential and anonymous and will only be used for the purposes outlined here.

If you have any questions either before or after completing the study please feel free to contact me (my contact details are given below).

Please note that participation in the study is voluntary and you may withdraw your assistance and information at any time if you wish without explanation.

Thank you for your participation.
