Early Music Week 2014 Student Questionnaire

1. SELF-RATING GUIDE

 
Thank you for registering for Early Music Week. We have a great week planned. Please fill out this brief questionnaire as soon as possible; popular classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You may want to make notes on a copy of the class list for yourself.

Although we have all enjoyed the thrill of playing with more advanced players, and have taken pleasure in making music with those who are less experienced, both learning and enjoyment are enhanced by working within a group of people with similar abilities. We use five categories to rate abilities, as explained below. When these levels are listed in the questionnaire, please use these guidelines to assess your own level as honestly as possible.

Note: Placing yourself at too low a level will result in your being unhappy in an unchallenging class; placing yourself too high can result in your own discomfort, as well as that of the others in the class!

If, by your assessment or that of the teacher, a placement error has been made, we will correct it by transferring you to a different class.

Beginner (B) - Just starting out

Low Intermediate (LI) - Know most of the notes on the instrument, or can competently match vocal pitches as a singer. Can keep up in an ensemble, if:
● music has no challenging fingering, intervallic leaps, or rhythmic surprises
● there is an opportunity to practice the part
● others are doubling the same part

Intermediate (I) - Comfortable over the whole range of an instrument (or voice), and can:
● sight read/sing simple music without hesitation or prior practice
● master more difficult parts with sufficient practice
● carry a simple part alone without getting lost

High Intermediate (HI) - Fairly fluent with voice or instrument, and competent on another instrument of the same family, and able to:
● sight read/sing moderately difficult music (with runs, leaps, rhythmic complexities)
● carry part alone without getting lost, even if some of the notes are missed
● identify and use a variety of stylistic devices (articulations, bowings, ornaments, etc.)

Advanced (A) - Fluent with voice or on all instruments in the family, and able to:
● sight read all but the most virtuosic music
● play most of the ensemble repertory without getting lost
● apply stylistic devices appropriately
