Here we tell you what you're in for ... and get your Informed Consent.
The purpose of this survey is to get an idea of the range of digital archiving practices used by emerging writers. We think this topic is fascinating, in part because we don't know what practices our fellow writers engage in regarding the "archiving" of their work. So, we've composed a survey that we hope will cover a variety of working styles and techniques (hopefully in a not-too redundant fashion).

We are interested in how you save, back up, and work with your digital and paper files, and we're hoping that this information will be an impetus for special collection and archive departments to begin thinking about how they will collect the "papers" of writers whose work has been done primarily in digital formats. We will be presenting our initial findings at the Personal Digital Archiving Conference in San Francisco on February 24 & 25, 2011. We also hope to write up the findings of our study in an article format this year as well. If you'd like, we will be happy to send you our findings and survey statistics when we're finished.

If you have any questions, you can write Devin at devinbecker@gmail.com or Collier at collier.nogues@yahoo.com. If you don't feel like filling out an online survey but would rather just send us a narrative concerning your archival practices, please just send one of us an email with the narrative. We would also be happy to conduct this survey with anyone on the phone, if they'd rather do it that way.

Thank you so much for participating.

Yours,
Devin Becker and Collier Nogues

INFORMED CONSENT STATEMENT

“Digital Archiving Practices of Emerging Writers”

You are invited to participate in a research study of the digital archiving practices of emerging writers. You were invited as a possible subject because you have published enough material to identify yourself as a writer that special collections and archives departments may someday collect. We ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.
The study is being conducted by Devin Becker (Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of Idaho) and Collier Nogues (Lecturer at the University of California, Irvine and author of the forthcoming book of poetry On the Other Side, Blue, to be released this spring by Four Way Books).

STUDY PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to better understand the way writers use digital resources and formats to archive their writing(s).

NUMBER OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN THE STUDY: If you agree to participate, you will be one of approximately 50 subjects who will be participating in this research.

PROCEDURES FOR THE STUDY: If you agree to be in the study, you will complete an anonymous, online survey. The survey will take around 25 minutes.

RISKS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY: While participating in the study, you risk being uncomfortable answering some questions.

BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY:

There will be no direct benefit to you for participating in this research. However, the results of this study will be used to improve and expand our knowledge of emerging writers' digital archiving practices in order to develop and provide services that will benefit the future collection procedures for special collections and archives departments. The results will be shared with research participants, a wider “personal digital archiving” community including librarians and archivists, and in publications and future conferences. These results may also lead to the development of a best practices document for the archiving of writers’ digital files.

ALTERNATIVES TO TAKING PART IN THE STUDY:

Instead of participating in the study, you have the option of not participating by exiting this screen via the “Exit this survey” link at the top right of this page or by closing your browser.

CONFIDENTIALITY
