Want an incredible opportunity to change the lives of young people?
Debate Mate is a five-year old educational charity that works in areas of high child poverty at some of the most deprived schools in the UK. We employ YOU – university students – to mentor for a period of 16 weeks from November – April, teaching debating to year 8-10 students. Teaching debating is an incredibly rewarding experience and a great opportunity to impact the lives of young people that need soft skills which debating provides.
About Debate Mate:
In 2011-12, the Debate Mate programme went from strength to strength in its biggest year ever. Over 2400 young people took part in our programme each week across London, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol in 145 schools. This coming year, we hope to be in even more schools across the country, and will continue in the 25 primary schools we worked in last year. We are also expanding to Nottingham in 2012/13.
What you do:
We need mentors with a passion for teaching and debating to mentor on our programme. You’ll teach one-hour, weekly debating sessions to year 8-10 students (year 5-6 if Primary) over a period of 16 weeks, including our two national competitions: the Urban Debate League and Debate Mate Cup. We ask that you make a commitment to mentor for the duration of the programme, and if you’re available to work in more than one school per week, that’s brilliant!
Get paid per hour session:
We will pay you £20 for each 1hr session you deliver (plus transport) plus £30-60 for any additional training or competition days - over £500 for the year! We provide comprehensive and in-depth training to make sure you’re prepared to go in to our schools, as well as conduct CRB checks on your behalf.
Why get involved:
One of the greatest inhibitors to social mobility are the ‘soft skills’ of confidence, communication skills, creative and critical thought – which are exactly the skills that debating develops. Mentoring on our programme allows you to form bonds and change lives of young people who are in most need of inspiring role models like yourselves. You also gain valuable experience that is great for your CV and are exposed to our partner organisations such as Teach First, Deutsche Bank, Artemis, Credit Suisse, Slaughter & May, Shell, Deloitte and more! These organisations work in partnership with us because they want to employ people like you!
If you are interested in mentoring on our programme, register below and we will be in touch starting in September 2012:
