1. Community-wide Challenge

Taking action as individuals in concert with others is an exciting and powerful way to accelerate the development of a sustainable community. The 2008 Corvallis Energy Challenge is a good example.

In 2010, the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition may launch another "challenge" to engage Corvallis and Benton County residents. We have identified three possible challenges. We also want YOUR ideas for possible challenges!

Please take a few moments to fill out the survey below. We will share the preliminary results at Town Hall 2010 on March 11. Thank you for your participation!

DIRECTIONS: You may support one, two, or all three of the "challenges" described below.

Please complete the survey no later than March 9, 2010.

Question Title

* 1. CAR-FREE DAY: In cities and countries throughout the world, Car-free Day is celebrated on September 22. Citizens are invited to help tackle climate change and improve quality of life by participating in a wide range of activities promoting sustainable mobility. On "Car-free Day" residents would be encouraged to choose alternative modes of transportation such as bicycling, walking, and public transit, as well as car use practices like car-sharing and car-pooling. Find out more about how other communities have participated in Car-Free Day at www.worldcarfree.net and www.22september.org.

* 2. "CARROT-MOBBING" LOCAL BUSINESSES: "Carrot-mobbing" is the practice of people going in large numbers on the same day to shop at a local business that has been specially chosen for its good practices. The idea is to use the "carrot" of increased business, rather than the "stick" of boycotts. For example, Corvallis restaurants that are members of the Local 6 Connection (i.e., they have agreed to serve at least one menu item daily that is primarily from local ingredients) would be selected as carrot-mobbing sites. On one day each month, people would be encouraged to eat at a particular Local 6 restaurant. Find out more about how other communities have participated in Carrot-mobbing at www.carrotmob.org or http://portland.carrotmob.org/.

* 3. LOW CARBON DIET: "Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds" is a practical, easy-to-use guide that shows step-by-step how to dramatically reduce household CO2 output in a short time. It has been used most successfully when individuals join a team of neighbors, friends, co-workers, or members of an organization or faith community. The team meets just four times, with team members selecting at least one action from the guide's menu of options to try out between meetings. The peer support and information sharing that occurs reinforces new practices. (When the diet was introduced in Portland in 2000, residents who participated cut their household emissions by an average of 6,700 pounds!) Find out more about Low Carbon Diet teams at http://www.empowermentinstitute.net.lcd/.

* 6. The Sustainability Fair and Town Hall meeting on March 11 will be an opportunity for Corvallis area residents to learn about what others are doing -- and to share what they are doing -- to help create a more sustainable community. Town Hall 2010 will be a model "green" event, with zero waste, low energy and water use, and refreshments made from local ingredients. Hundreds of people are expected to attend, and we hope you will be among them! All are welcome, but space is limited. Register at www.sustainablecorvallis.org.
