7. The Whitney Point Central School District has a history
of offering quality extracurricular programs. Extracurricular
activities and athletics provide many students a structured,
supervised activity for the after school hours and create a
sense of “belonging” to the school and community. Research
has shown that participation in athletics and school-sponsored
activities improves student achievement and graduation rates.
Given the economic climate, how important do you think
it is for the district to maintain a variety of quality extracurricular
and athletic programs? (Please check one)

8. The Whitney Point Central School District is dedicated to
the continuous improvement of academic achievement for
all students. Research has repeatedly shown that students
in classes with 15 – 20 individuals score higher on measures
of academic achievement than students in larger classes.
Given the economic climate, how important do you think
it is for the district to consider class size when making

9. The Whitney Point Central School District is committed to
providing educational programs that are rigorous, relevant,
and focused on maintaining high learning standards for all
students. To attain that goal the district provides programs,
services and personnel beyond what is required by education
law in New York State. Examples of non-mandated programs
and services include Advanced Placement and college level
classes, field trips, and expanded art and music offerings.

it is for the district to maintain non-mandated programs,

10. Traditionally, the Whitney Point Central School District has
followed preventive maintenance processes, such as replacement
cycles and scheduled maintenance, in order to protect
and extend the useful life of district facilities and transportation
assets.
Given the economic climate, how important do you think
it is for the district to follow preventive maintenance

11. Colleges and employers expect that graduates will be computer
literate and technologically savvy. Schools are constantly
challenged to keep abreast of technology changes. At Whitney
Point, every teacher and classroom has access to computers.
Each school has at least one computer lab designed for whole
class instruction and use. To stay current with technology the
district has a replacement cycle for computers and makes
technology purchases through BOCES to maximize purchasing
power and BOCES aid.

it is for the district to stay current with technology?

12. Increasing savings through building fund balance and specific
reserves is a strategy to improve the district’s financial flexibility.
Increased savings would allow the district more options
for responding to unexpected economic downturns, including
reductions in state revenues, and better provide the ability to
stabilize the budget and tax levy.

13. The following is a list of budget considerations. Please order
these according to what you think the district should work
hardest to fund during the next three to five years, with the
most important being 1, to the least important at 15.

14. Schools in New York State receive the majority of their funding
through state aid and school tax levies. The district’s dependence
on the state and tax payers for funding could be reduced with
the identification of alternative revenue sources. Although school
districts are limited by law in the ways they can raise money,
we welcome your creative ideas.

15. The Whitney Point Central School District is aware of the need
to provide quality educational programs at a cost tax payers can
support. The district constantly works to implement cost saving
measures such as Energy Management, BOCES shared services,
consolidation of schools and programs, reconfiguration of
administrative positions and by examining internal processes
and procedures.
We welcome your ideas about additional ways to implement
cost saving measures. Please share with us your thoughts on
potential efficiencies.

16. The Whitney Point Central School District is not alone in facing
challenging financial times. Although we will continue to look
for opportunities for savings and efficiencies, we rely on our
community to help us identify savings, as well as assist us in
the fulfillment of our educational mission. This is a shared
responsibility between the school district and its residents.
