Project Title: The Impact of Mindfulness Training on Level of Consciousness and Problem Solving in College Students
You are being asked to participate in a project conducted through (Department of Psychology/College of Education) at Valdosta State University by Dr. Jules A. Troyer and Dr. Jeremy R. Tost that involves research. The researchers are required to receive your informed consent before you participate in this project.
Your participation in research is voluntary. If you refuse to participate there are no penalties or loss of benefits or services that you are otherwise entitled to. If you decide to participate and then withdraw or skip a question there are also no penalties or loss of benefits or services.
A basic explanation of the project is written below.
Read the following and please check "I agree" on the next question.
The purpose of this study is to collect data from a selected sample of University students over the age of 18 in order to determine the impact of mindfulness training on level of consciousness and problem solving ability. The Troyer Level of Consciousness Inventory has been scrutinized according to scientific guidelines for designing a questionnaire, as well as for providing for anonymity and good item form. This instrument was pilot-tested Fall 2007 and at Northern Arizona University for clarity, comprehensibility and brevity, validated in 2008 in a large scale U.S. national study, and a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted at Delta State University in 2009.
The problem solving tasks are popular examples that have been used in a wide variety of previous studies on problem solving. The problems fall within three categories: 1) Problems of inducing structure (analogy, series completion, 9 dot problem, and matchstick problem), 2) Problems of arrangement (string problem and anagrams), and 3) Problems of transformation (hobbits and orcs and the water jug problems).
2. EXPLANATION OF PROCEDURES:
The participants will be recruited from universities and asked to sign this consent form at the time of sign up. First, participants will complete a short demographics questionnaire. Second, participants will take the 23 item Troyer Level of Consciousness Inventory (TLOCI). The TLOCI has already been focus group tested at Northern Arizona University in Fall 2007, validated in a large scale national study. Participants will complete problems in each of the categories outlined above. The participants will complete the problem solving tasks.
